G.L. Pease Maltese Falcon Pipe Tobacco Review

I want to thank the guy that gave me some Maltese Falcon to try at the 2009 Chicago Pipe Show. I don’t remember his name, but Maltese Falcon has become one of my favorite pipe tobacco blends. I have been smoking it for the last three days straight and I am not tired of it yet. I have had it in the morning, afternoon and night. It is tasty and delightful at anytime of day. To describe this tobacco in a word, I would say "Flavorful". It’s like a rich strong dark coffee with a little bit of milk and sugar added to tame any sharp bite you might get.

If I had to describe it in two words, I would say "Smoky & Sweet". There is enough Latakia smokiness to satisfy the Latakia-lovers, but the flavors are complex, exotic and mellow at the same time. The sweetness of matured Red Virginias mixed with spicy sweet Orientals is perfectly balanced with the Cyprian Latakia. Maltese Falcon is a full-bodied, yet extremely smooth smoke.

There is definitely a little bit of caramel in there as you progress through the smoke. I would say that no matter what you normally like to smoke, you should try Maltese Falcon. It has a little something for everyone. There’s enough Latakia for those fans, and enough sweetness with so many different flavors that just about everybody should find something to like about Maltese Falcon.

The tin aroma is sweet and smoky and the visual is a nice mixture of dark and light tobaccos, and it is cut a little bit chunky with big leaves. It burns cool and sweet and never disappoints. Maltese Falcon also reminds me of another one of my favorites; Frog Morton. If you like Frog Morton, you will like Maltese Falcon and vice versa.

A look inside the tin reveals the course cut light and dark flakes.

  • I’ve had a tin of this cellared for almost a year. I had intended to open it as soon as I got it, but other blends took precedence.
I know this has been a favorite of yours for a while, and I’m encouraged by all the positive reviews for it. But I’m actually kind of afraid to crack my tin open ’cause I don’t want to be disappointed given my high expectations, especially after not enjoying Key Largo all that much.
Perhaps I’ll move this tin higher up the list, ’cause I am really curious about it. It definitely sounds like something I’ll like.

  • I understand why you would say that ST, since both blends have Red Virginia, Orientals and Cyprian Latakia. Of course MT doesn’t have the cigar leaf. I haven’t tried Key Largo myself, but I stand by my review of Maltese Falcon. I’ve killed a tin already, and opened a 2nd one.

  • I liked the movie. I love the tin image. You’ve made it sound like a delight. Why not. I believe I will put this one on my next order. Thanks Kevin.

  • I love the pics that go along with the reviews. I like seeing what a tobacco looks like before buying. Great photos.
