Every single film which happens to show characters smoking should be automatically given an over 18 certification, the World Heath Organisation (WHO) has demanded.
In their new report, Smoke-free Movies, published today, the international body said that 44 per cent of all Hollywood films showed smoking in 2014.
Hoping to influence the industry and policy makers in the lead up to the Oscars this year, they insisted that censoring the activity in movies was the “last frontier” for those wanting to control people’s smoking habits.

People are not obeying, so we must control their minds by forcing Hollywood to take a huge pay cut on any movie with smoking.

They can demand all they want. I don't think it will change anything. The entertainment industry is about 1 thing. Money.

Let's be fair about this, then. Any movie with alcohol should have a 21+ rating. And then you have sugary soft drinks, bacon, fast food... There is so much to be done!

I have never, ever, ever seen someone refused a ticket at the theater for being "under age." I have never heard of a kid being carded for a movie. Maybe this area is different, but no one enforces that crap here. Pitting an R on a movie just means that it is good. PG, phhht, just tells me that the movie is crap. The ratings are just one more aspect of marketing. Oh, and of course for parents that believe in this sort of stupidity.

I was carded way back when I went to see Cronenberg's Crash at a moviehouse in the suburbs of Atlanta.
It's a great flick, but the J.G. Ballard book is much better,

as usual,

yet Cronenberg did an excellent job - the film is both creepy and stimulating at the same time.
Smoking boners!

Popeye just received a R rating? Lol
It's all about progress. I have to laugh at those who stumble on this thread, who support this type of World Wide Political Correctness. Sneering behind their pipe advocating the long reach of tyranny. Really? Maybe? WHO cares? We Care! Sounds familiar. I'm still stuck on the R Rated Popeye. "Come Here Olives! Me has a big pipe ready for ya. Yhuck,Yhuck,Yhuck..."

Actually, Popeye said some pretty risque stuff when he was mumbling. I saw a special on the making of Popeye. They really snuck a LOT of stuff by the censors back jn the day.
There's always been an establishment is charge. I really do not have the energy to hate on invisible entities. And, at my age... Phhht. Its much better today than it ever has been. My opinions, and opinions are like... me, ha ha.

I understand the motive related to health, but this is disturbing, and more than just from the pipe smokers point of view. For example, suppose there is a film about World War II, which in order to be historically remotely accurate, would include quite a bit of smoking. People would have to be 18 to see it? In a time when many of our bright young people are historical ignoramuses? Many wouldn't know which came first, World War I or the Korean War. Or why Abraham Lincoln is never pictured with his cell phone. There is a difference between high-minded and stupid, which would be good to keep in mind.

They used to have total nudes on calendars in Popeye. One of my favorite quotes from Popeye in one of his mumbling fits was in one of the first color releases he sees Olive in a tower waving a handkerchief and yelling for help, he laughs and say, "Imma gonne flub her good, he he, I never made flub in technicolor before, he he he." Of course kids just think he's mumbling, but adults paying attention, "gasp!!"

At $14-18 a pop for movie tickets, most under-18 yr olds watch movies on PPV, Netflix etc. Not to mention Youtube, or a gazillion and one free porno sites. The entertainment industry is laughing their asses off at this latest bit of toothless regulation aimed at placating the ignorant indignants at both ends of the political spectrum.

The FCC tried to keep gangsta rap from corrupting the minds of America's youth by putting Explicit Content stickers on the albums and requiring one to be 16yrs of age to purchase them. Sales went through the roof and a lot of rappers got filthy rich in the 90s.

Yup ... a waste of exasperation. People under 40 are living in a whole different world of electronic access. Although many still know zip about history.
