When I first took up the pipe in '91, around where I live and the closest B&M I would frequent, aromatics were blends containing tobaccos with a heavy fragrant smell. Latakias, Orientals, certain Virginias, and burleys with a heavy earthy smell fell into that catagory. Those blends with candy or fruit flavorings were just called flavored blends. Until I joined the forum back in 2014, I had never heard of a flavored blend called an aromatic, and was wondering when that changed.

Hmm, that's an interesting question. I too remember back in the 80s when I began pipe smoking that blends were generally referred to as flavored or not flavored, like English blends or Virginias or whatever. Don't recall "aromatics" being used as a category.
Then again, I don't remember much discussion about tobacco in general. It was there. You bought it or you didn't. People talked about cigars like they would about fine wines, but pipe tobacco? One just smelled the jars and bought what you liked best, or you asked for a tin or pouch off the shelf. Not much discussion at all.

My experience as well.
