I recently acquired a GBD Speciale with a silver band. The hallmarks were well worn but research leads me to believe the hallmarks read city of London, silver content 925, and year of make 1915-16. What surprised me was what I believe is a draft hole incorporated into the base of the pipe. Can anyone shed some light on when this practice began and when was it discontinued? Thanks!

Thanks for the clarification. I did some more research and, yep, it's a carburetor. I would have preferred it if the pipe didn't have this feature but I didn't think I would run across another GBD pipe with a silver band so I picked it up while I had the chance.

There is at least one guy on the forum that says it helps to get burn all tobacco burned up in the bowl. But if you dont maintain the hole, it will just fill up with cake and you will have a normal pipe.
