Why are these auctions getting these bids?

Group psychology, or maybe someone knows something about them I don't. Even if they have some history or special pedigree, they don't lure me to pack them up with a delicious blend and lean back for a contemplative smoke. I think sometimes people just get caught up in an auction. You could get some very fine pipes, new or estate, for these prices. I don't see the value here. Maybe someone will enlighten us on the wonderful lineage of these awkward looking old briars.

That is a strong market for these based on the bidding. I have bid on a number of items from Shop Goodwill auction site. Never thought to look for pipes. Must have some nice restoration potential.

I can see the potential in several of those lots for the high bid, but a couple I can't and it probably has to do with some people knowing something about one of those pipes that the rest of us don't. They look old and each lot is a combination of popular pipe shapes. Good marketing if you ask me.

Some nice pipes, a couple of Sasieni's, Charatan's, a real nice old Stanwell, what looks like a hallmarked Pete, but...one never knows.

Monty, everything you said MIGHT be true, but the pics are so bad I can't tell much of anything about them, and some of what I CAN see looks bad. Also no descriptions or names?
Maybe it's just my eyes.

My thoughts exactly dmcmtk. I also saw a couple that could be Celius'. They are either being optimistic or sure of what those are. After being cleaned up, those prices could possibly be a great deal.

Yes, dmcmtk, several potentially good pipes in there, although it's hard to be sure given the quality of the pictures. I wonder if one could get more information with a phone call to the Seattle goodwill. I've certainly seen less promising lots.

Did anyone notice the seller is Seattle Good Will. That might have something to do with it. Might have nothing to do with the pipes and everything to do with charity.

You can find some gems on eBay in the estate section. I ended up with an estate Pioneer gourd calabash that was in great shape for $40. Hell of a deal. I usually see them go for sometimes twice what I paid. I got lucky that the auction was for a "sherlock holmes pipe" and not a "calabash."
I like these auctions with multiple pipes where ONE is all you came for. I get bonuses to hone my refurbishing skills and then I just sell them because I only bought them for that one pipe in the lot.

I think Glouchesterman has it, charity or a tax-deductible purchase/donation. Lots of repair bands and no real nomenclature shots. I don't know Danish pipes, perhaps a jewel is hidden in a group.
This Sasieni is pretty beat.

A 3 pc C Comoys here and brass logo GBD, but not anywhere near a $162 value.

This is very interesting. I bought a lot of 5 pipes 3 years ago from the Seattle GoodWill site for $12.00. It may be that someone there finally woke up and EBay was the answer to making more money than their direct site. Good for them but less so for us.
