I walk over to the fireplace and carefully choose just the right size coal, and gently grab the coal with the tongs...Oh hell!! I use those plastic Ronson refillable lighters. They last pretty well.

Zippo Pipe Lighter, Matte Black, oh I do have a brushed Stainless too...
I would like to find some strike anywhere matches about 3.5" long... no luck...
Matches
Zippo pipe lighter.
Phil, would love to find some matches like you mentioned. Maybe I'll buy some fireplace matches and cut them down to size. LOL
Sorry for the miss use of "you're". It should be your pipes. I could not edit. I should not start threads with a hangover
Mick, ...and worse, you misused "miss use."
Sounds like you need a hair of the dog that bit you.
4 asprin
1 Peanut butter and jelly sandwich
1 Large glass of milk.....
Little gems from Wally-world.
Saints fan huh?
Anything with a flame. I use matches, Bics, Zippo, Colibri pipe lighter, and Xikar pipe lighter. Like I said, anything with a flame, lol.
Diamond kitchen matches or a marlboro zippo I've had since I was 15.
Thanks Cortez. I am pretty sure that was the problem
My bright orange plastic bic lighter didn't impress anyone at any of the pipe shows, but that is what I used.
Flint and steel anyone?
A bolt of lightning provided by mother nature…
A Bic lighter blessed by a voodoo priest and holy water from the Vatican . Top that !
Have you spoken with him since the earthquake?
Two pieces of wet Balsa Wood given to me by Charlie Daniels while singing "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" while sipping "Jack Daniels" IN THE RAIN!
I use a Berkley Windproof Lighter made by the New Jersey Flashlight Co.
It must be from the 40's or 50's back when we made things in America!!
It works great.
I found an advertisement for my lighter thought it was cool.
Check it out!

Where did you find such a lighter brazz? That sounds very cool.
I want to get a Zippo pipe lighter. Has anyone tried those?
I have two... One in Matte Black and the other brushed stainless or whatever it is... I love them both...
Dunendain, I purchased my Grandmothers house when she passed away. We moved in and realized nothing in the house changed since she moved in, in the 40's. and she saved everything, including some cool lghters I'l try to post some pic's of the others.
That's great man. I love little old nicknacks. My wife inherited a bunch of old things when her mom and dad died.
The witch doctor is fine .And Phil must be an ex boy scout . LOL .I too would like to try the pipe zippo .
I use Coal from the fire
I have a brushed steel Zippo. I really like it and don't seem to notice the naptha taste that others do, though I usually let it burn a second or two before the flame hits the bowl.
I also have a cheap IMCO butane pipe lighter with a 45 degree angled flame. I've had it for about four years and it's been worth the money.
The next two lighters I'd really like to have are a Nimrod/Sportsman like my dad used to use and an IM Corona Old Boy. I think if I had a Corona lighter, the first time I used it I could finally say to myself, "I have arrived.".

I hope this came thru this is what I use. It has the coolest place for an extra flint. The screw you take uot to fill the lghter is double ended, you unscrew the oppiste end of the refill screw and out slides an extra flint. I left my camera at work, maybe I'll post some pic's when I pick up my camera.

At home I always use strike-on-box matches. But I was looking for a butane lighter for use away from home; so, in a forum topic last month I solicited recommendations from site members. I ended up purchasing a Lotus 11 based on skymuscle83 's recommendation. I think it is an extremely convenient right-angle, soft flame, butane lighter. Very satisfied. But durability counts too, so I'll keep folks posted on that.
MY only complaint with butane lighters is... I have a hard time filling them... for some reason, they don’t like me or I’m doing something wrong... It’s probably the last because it’s all the butane lighters’ I’ve had...
At least with my Zippo, I know it’s full... The fluid drips out of it... (I’ve had my hand I fire once or twice...)
I normally use kitchen matches, I wish I could find one of the old metal match boxes to carry them in, I haven't seen one in years

I used all the K-Y on the cobs... Snicker snicker...
JWP,
Here ya go...

At least you can look at one again... I can't seem to find a "newer" one, maybe we should go into the "match safe business"...

I used to have the same problem until I'd read somewhere that I needed to depress the valve and let the air out before refilling and then giving the lighter a few minutes to reach room temperature before striking. I don't know how important the second part of that is, but I follow it.
For whatever reason, the cheap IMCO lighter I have doesn't require any of those steps.
The thing I learned about a butane is: Turn the can upside down. Heep it straight, give it a push, and it fills in about 1 second. Just form a good seal, otherwise the gas will escape from the lighter.
I bought some kitchen matches, and I must say that I really like them, but at the end of the day, I had enough wood to build a tree house. I pack tight, so I have many relights.
Well you could use the match sticks to build a fire for the mice during the winter...
I get one or two of these, but I don't need 100 like you have to order...
Right. Who needs trees anyway..
Thanks for the pics Phil, I will keep an eye out at yard sales and flea markets may be I can find an old one, I expect they are collectable and pricey on ebay or maybe I will try my hand tin smithing, he, he may be a new occupation
Old topic... but my NEW .02 cents worth... I tried wood matches today (it's been a while)... I seem to like them... However, I must watch were I throw them when pipe making... Lot's of wood dust and chips...
I love my Corona Old Boy.
Cheap Bic lighters , though i am checking with a shop not far away that gives away inexpensive Angle type lighters with tobacco sales.
I use a disposable lighters, jeep, bic, etc, or matches. I have 4 very good cigar torch lighters, so I just can't bring myself to buy a good pipe lighter until I sell or trade a cigar lighter first.
JC, what do you have to trade? I have a Zippo that I might part with...
Phil for godsake don't Richard prior yourself.
I've said it before and I'll say it again. My Thunderbird butane zippo style pipe lighter is so far the best $15 I've spent. I ran across anothe forgotten zippo I have so I may buy the insert and have 2. The inserts are only like 10 bucks or something.
Two Colibri touch lighters... one is a double and the other a triple flame, but I don't want a Zippo. If you're real nice and stop by as you pass through Ohio with a nice bottle of Single Malt Scotch I may just give you one but the scotch stays when you leave... LOL
How’s the Grad festivities coming along?
Graduation on Suday at 1:30pm, then I'm kicking his ass out! And the bottle will be empty when I leave...
I like bics. They are cheap and you don't have to worry if it gets destroyed, lost, or something else unforseeable.
When I smoke inside I have an old corona old boy that was my grandpa's. For outside and everyday use I have a zippo pipe lighter or just a bic. Most the time I'm outside so matches don't really cut it.
The Flower Basket safety matches made in Sweden
For a few years, I've been using an Old Boy and really enjoy it. Lately, I took
stock of all the wooden matches that are around here - you know, the stuff you accumulate from shops and internet orders. Being a frugal sort, I started using the match at home, and saving the Old Boy for the truck. There's a difference that I'm
starting to notice. In a recent thread, on another Forum, the point was made that the
match burns around 200 deg, while the butane Pipe lighter burns around 600 deg.
This makes the tobacco taste differently. OK, so it's not a night and day type of difference, but it's there. Even using the Old Boy for the initial light only, sets
up a different set of volatiles in the rest of the Pipe's load, as tobacco absorbs like a sponge. The result has been, for me at least, to reach for the wooden match more often than the Old Boy, but I still prefer the Old Boy when I need to do a quick relight in the truck. At first, I was a bit skeptical, but I'm starting to notice a bit of difference in the flavors of the smoke, and I'm using up these matches that have been laying around for a few years.
I agree Fred,
There is a difference between the flavor of the tobacco when lighting with a match than there is with a butane lighter.
I am also, an advocate for slowing down and the "there are too many conveniences today" attitude.
If for no other reason, than slowing down, use a couple of matches.
I don't consider myself a hypocrite but, I use cheap butanes when everywhere but my easy chair.
Thermodynamics of pipe smoking
Yes, Pstlpkr it's difficult to sacrifice the convenience of using a butane lighter in public... Matches are great, but using them all of the time can be a trial, as they do take a little longer to use & start to pile up in the ashtray.
I've only ever used a BIC lighter. I can't trust myself with my house key...why would I even chance a nice lighter.
the thunderbird insert for a zippo is made by kgm vector. it works great but drop it in a never used zipo body.
btw, their web sit is http://www.vectorkgm.com
i use the insert AND my old zippo both.
Yep maduro. I have a thunderbird and it's a great lighter.

Someone above asked about flint and steel- I've done it, but it's sort of a pain. You have to set your char on something that will let you move it to the pipe fairly quickly, and then it's not a 100% guarantee that it'll light. So it's almost stressful trying to do it (for me, that is. I'm sure there's someone who gets it to work the first time, every time and then can smoke his pipe down to fine ash without having to relight
). Alternately you can use the char to start a fire and then light your pipe with an ember while you're waiting to warm up, or for your meal to cook.
I used to use strike anywhere matches, but they're getting hard to find, so I've stashed those away and started using the strike on box matches. I have a pipe zippo and it's convenient when it has fluid
but being able to put the flame just above the tobacco with a match makes them my go-to 'baccy lighting method.
I need to revive this thread. Back when it originally appeared, I responded with one word, BIC. Recently, an old friend who said he couldn't stand seeing me use a plastic Bic with my beautiful briars, gave me an 'im corona' pipe lighter. OMG. I hereby change my answer. This thing is a work of art that brings a new touch of class to the pipe smoking experience. If you've already invested in a fine pipe collection, consider a lighter worthy of that collection. Life can always be improved.
