I was wondering if most pipemakers in the 40's and 50's would likely have tried putting out pipes with a perspex stem? I saw a custombilt with one and wondered if it was even likely that such a thing happened.

Besides Barling, GBD used Perspex stems. They came into use because rubber got scarce during WW2. The perspex stem on the Barling Pot is the fake. A genuine Barling perspex stem has the crossed Barling logo impressed in the plastic, and the airway funnels open into the slot. Also, the airway just looks a bit ragged. And, the shape is all wrong.
The bidding on the other Perspex stemmed Barling should prove entertaining. The usual gang of suspects has lined up and is bidding on several of these recent listings.

I saw the fake, but couldn't find the real one. Can anybody help me on this?

This one is a little strange... Looks like a non-OEM spigot,

Jesse, Would the original stem have had a spigot cap or is that likely a repair or enhancement device?
Good question! If you look at the images you will see that the spigot actually covers the TVF stamp. It's a later addition. As to why, I can't answer that without the pipe in my hands. But any of the above reasons you stated are a possibility.
The fitment on the stem looks like a Barling stem fitment, but I don't know that the fitment shape was unique to Barling. And if it's not stamped with the EB WB makers' mark, it's not Barling work.

...this is the kind of auction I'm often looking out for:

...I like these kind of auctions too, seeing rare stuff up close & etc.,

but I'm sure that the price will be much higher than those "two old pipes" :!:

That seller has an number of interesting pieces, including that Kaywoodie.

I agree on the other Perspex stem, that looks rough.

Should be fun to watch the other, a good heads up!

I put a bid on some old beaters just because it also had this stummel in the bargain. I know nothing. I was hoping it was worthy of a georged replacement stem.

Newbroom, That looks like a 1969 hallmark on that Barling, and the pipe seems pretty clean. Congrats!

buroak, yes, the bowl and stem seem to be in pretty good shape. I need a stem, now. The one from my Shire works, but it isn't what I would like.

I'd LIKE a georged made stem.
