I know little about these pipes other than what I've read recently. I'm looking at a couple of them and like this one probably best but I don't know it's worth. It's listed as "Buy Now". It's got the James Upshall signature on one side with the letter "B" and the other side has Tilshead England and below that "Made by Hand". It looks good but worth $220?

D***. I had a web site that had all info on Upshall pipes. It is not there now. However, I did copy a page that might help. The "James Upshall" are the higher grade pipes put out by JRF. The Empire series is the highest grade. The B is for the lowest grade of the straight grain pipes. I cannot believe that the Web site has disappeared!

Here is the upshall website http://upshallusa.com/. I love the Upshall brand and in my opinion they are great smokers. You can get great deals if you know what you are looking at. The pipe you are showing looks nice, but it looks like the rim has been scorched by a lighter. I think the price is a bit high. I personally have bought P grades for much less and their sand blasted even lower. The sand blasted smoke as good as their straight grains. One of my best smoking pipes is an upshall I bought years ago on ebay for 75 bucks. You should look at this guy who owns the company now. He has many Upshalls listed.

Great info-thanks everyone...I'm still reading. So, the P grade is more or less a middle of the road grade but what is the FH for-I haven't figured that one out yet?
cigrmaster, that fellow has some good prices. Probably the best I've seen yet. Thanks for the link. I'm a little confused about their sizing, however. I saw one that was a size 4 with a length of 6" and height of 1.6". Another was a size 5 with length of 5.5" and height of 1.8" Apparently it's not just the length that designates the size.

. thanks, herb. I googled that and didn't turn up anything. James, the fellow that now owns Upshall has some fine lookers. I liked the size 6 semi bent freehand because it looks like a fairly large one at 6 1/2" long and has plenty of wood surrounding the bowl. Too many good ones to choose. And, then you have Dunhill and Peterson....but, I don't think you could go wrong with either of these three.

Not to my knowledge. There once was a couple good ones here but they disappeared. There's one that's talked about here on the forum now and then close by(within 7 miles) but from what I read, they weren't all that knowledgeable about pipes or tobacco, unfortunately.

colcolt, if you like a substantial size pipe that will give you a good hour plus of smoking, group 5, 6 and larger is what I recommend. I am partial to group 6 or large 5's. I have owned many Upshalls over the years and for the money it is hard to find a better smoker. Right now the Upshall market is depressed so you can really get some good deals.

Of all the Upshalls he has for sale I think this one is the best deal. http://www.ebay.com/itm/LARGE-2001-JAMES-UPSHALL-P-GRADE-SEMI-BENT-FREEHAND-MINT-NO-RESERVE-/400310049338?pt=UK_Collectables_Tobacciana_Smoking_LE&hash=item5d34569a3a&_uhb=1#ht_1326wt_1393
That pipe will be a fantastic smoker, huge thick walls, nice size and decent grain. Don't get too caught up in the grain game, go for the best smoker.

That is a little high for a smoked B grade, . Here's some completed Ebay listings on B-grade pipes, they run from $129 to over $200. I have two P grade pipes, one S and one unmarked (early Upshall). They are all wonderful smokers, my best.
Here is those completed listings, many from Mr. Ezrati's ebay site:

I'll be dipped. This is the very one I was looking at less than an hour ago and already it's sold. I guess the early bird gets the worm.

These two are pretty nice and are good values. If you don't like them then just save him as a seller and keep an eye out for others.

I was looking at those two as well as this one but this one is a size 4 and I'd prefer a bit larger.

For about the same price I could get this one I've been lusting after...too many decisions.

colcolt, I agree that a group 4 is too small. I am biased to Upshalls and when I can buy a pipe that retails for 465.00 for 220 delivered, I go for that kind of deal. I don't have much experience with Petersons so I cannot comment on the one you linked to.

Yep-My Nording Crown Viking is good for a 15-20 minute smoke but I need a bigger one for those times you want to kick back on the deck with a large glass of iced tea and your dog by your side. It don't get any better.
