Four days until Christmas! I am highly suspicious that there is a book on pipemaking under the tree, (it is on my credit card.) Sunday I braved the cold to enjoy an hour in the shop with my lathe. I turned about 6-7 different possible shapes of pipes out of scrap apple wood. Then I turned a stem out of another piece of wood. Not functional, but certainly gives me an idea of what a pipe of that shape would feel like.
With a shop full of tools, several hundred wood blanks, and a love of turning, I may have solved the problem of ghosting. Just make a new pipe for each new blend!

Hrmmm I've never gotten a pipe book. Reckon it's time I looked into it.
The pipes I've made have always been for myself and mostly for functionality.

I've never gotten real concerned with "artsy fartsy" or how wonderful the finish is yet.

Ropp did well for years just drilling a couple of holes in a hunk of cherry branch and adding a stem!

Here are are the sample shapes I turned.
Here is a working pipe I made earlier today. It actually smokes pretty good. The shortcut to Mushroom discussion inspired the shape.

Really like that mushroom. Must be really nice to have a shop to create in. Those apple wood turnings are nice ideas also.

Anyone can do woodturnings like I do. Anyone willing to invest several thousand in tools and multiple years practicing, that is. Almost anyone can become an expert at whatever they want, if they are willing to invest a lot of effort into it.
Seriously, thanks for the comments. One of the reasons for my turning is the WOW! factor.
