Just got back from an advance screening of True Grit remake. Awesome movie, alittle short for my liking but very good and worth going to. Just wanted to mention that Matt Damon's character Le Boeuf smokes a Meerschaum pipe. Great scenes with him on a porch at night kickin his spurred feet up smokin, sitting by the bed in a chair smokin, and sitting with his back on a log by the fire smokin. So there you go pipe fanatics, besides a great western you can see some pipe smoking.

How does the movie compare with the original? Right now, I can't imagine a "better" Rooster Cogburn

than that portrayed by John Wayne. I think only theatrical flops should be remade.

I've seen both and I think its one of those remake gems that surpasses the original. Jeff Bridges brought way more to the character. John Wayne is a legend of course and his Rooster is iconic, but John Wayne is John Wayne. The Duke seems a little out of his element playing a bafoon which made the first True Grit fun and memorable. Jeff Bridges kills it and fills the boots even better (in my opinion...people might shit on me). Bridges plays the drunk bafoon but balances it as the hard mother @#$* er with true grit.
All the acting was excellent, cinimatography, score, but most of all the seperate characters really make it amazing. Like I said in my first post I wish it was longer. But it is sweet and to the point.
Its tough remaking a iconic hit but the coen brothers did a great job. It seemed more of a reimagining of the book than a remake. Saying its a remake does it a disservice. Go to it thinking of a movie on its own without comparison to another.

I think Jeff Bridges is an great actor and I think he fits the part. It will be hard to surpass the original but I am willing to give it a chance. I hope I can see it soon!
P.S. - I just watched "Pirate Radio" and one of the characters smokes a pipe! Got to love it! :)

True Grit,…..I've been anxiously awaiting this one and can’t wait to go see it. I’ve got a feeling it’s going to be a great one.
As a western history buff I can attest to the fact that the westerns that you’ve seen lately are galaxies ahead of the meager offerings of the last century. The props, the clothes, the hats, the tack, the firearms, and even the ammunition are pretty accurate now. The 1969 film was one of the best motion pictures of it's time, but that time's long gone,.....
I’ve got a feeling Jeff Bridges has probably brought the novel’s character to life, and judging by the stills, that era is going to be accurately depicted.
I cannot wait to see how the Coen brothers put their mark on the film. (I’m a pretty big Coen Bro’s fan.)
Looking forward to a good show!

I am really looking forward to the 22nd. I too like western movies and tend to lean toward the older ones. But cant refuse going to go see this, Jeff Bridges did a darn good job in Wild Bill, so i expect another goodern from him

I too love the Duke.... but I gots ta see dis'un.
The old western genre was changing when Marion made True Grit.

It was changing towards realism and away from a stylized west.

That change is here to stay, I hope they don't luxuriate in the blood too much.

One thing that I always liked about the old westerns... when you got shot your were dead.

No ifs, ands, or buts, now e.g. Unforgiven... didn't like it... too real, but that's the stylized west... now.

I'm stoked for this flick. I love the original as well but I have to agree with the above opinion that The Duke is always The Duke and he is a classic for it. Bridges is a fine actor and I think his take on the character better represents the character. I always see John Wayne when I watch him in a film. I see the character being portrayed when I see Jeff Bridges in a role. To me that is the sign of a great actor. The Duke was more of a character unto himself.

For more western action, I highly suggest:
Sukiyaki Western Django

and also, if you have a Playstation 3 or XBox360 to get Red Dead Redemption.

The Duke is one of my hero's and the original True Grit one of my fav. I am excited to see this new verision from the trialers it looks very promising. I am willing to judge it on its own merits. Also fun to see pipe smoking in movies if it is believable .
