That is a good one to be sure. Have you tried Opening Night? The reason I ask as I think it is as good or better. Both are Virginia flakes blended by C&D.

This is like picking a favorite child. Do I pick daily smokes that are easy to get ahold of and I enjoy them more frequently? Or do I choose the ones I get to sit down to and relax with?

    Every day smokes
    Orlik Golden Sliced
    Baby's Bottom Match
    Sutlif R-Blend

    The sit and enjoyers
    Frog across the Pond
    Gaslight
    Escudo
    St James Flake
    Anndddddd drum roll please!
    FVF

Now let me get into some stuff I haven't gotten opened yet and change the list in a month. Penzance would be on the list if it weren't so damn hard to get. But I don't chase unicorns. Except Balkan Sobraine

Hmm, this is tough, because as the seasons change, so do the tobacco jars. A summer affair with Virginia is fleeting, soon giving way to a fall romance with Burley... but, oh, how I adore my winters with a certain English leaf!

As of right now, I've been spending most of my time snuggling up with:

Haunted Bookshop (and two-timing it a bit with Old J. Krantz)
    Cornell & Diehl: Billy Budd
Mac Baren: HH Old Dark Fired
McClelland: Frog Morton on the Bayou
    McClelland: Frog Morton Cellar

It's so difficult to be faithful! Don't even get me started on my small pipe harem.

Newminister 403 is surprisingly competitive with some of the more expensive flakes. Hope it finds a new fan.

    For my top five...

    1. C&D - Old Joe Krantz. Just lock me in a room with a bucket of this and a good briar.
    2. Dunhill - Royal Yacht. The best all-day work smoke ever.
    3. Peterson - Irish Flake and Perfect Plug. Very similar, very flavorful, extremely relaxing.
    4. Peterson - Irish Oak. Expect the unexpected, with piquant balance.
    5. GH&Co Ltd - Brown Twist Sliced. Despite some Lakeland (vomit) a solid smoke with depth.

...right now. Dunhill - Nightcap should be on there too.

My tastes have changed somewhat over the past few years, but my five go to smokes are:
(in no particular order) Escudo, Deep Hollow, Fusilier's Ration, Black Cavendish and Mississippi River.
Honorable mention for Stonehaven, but I rarely smoke it; I just sit in my cellar stroking the jar and mumbling something about my precious...

I know it's only 4, but that's what is in the rotation at the moment.

This is easy if you forgo order. It's the sequence that makes it tough. It's such a weird phenomenon, one I've never witnessed anywhere else, that so many refuse to name a favorite or a best. It's so weird!! No need to explain. I understand your reasoning. This is why, assuming you want an answer, you phrase it as "if you could have only one". Go to any other product related forum and ask "what's the best" or "what's your favorite" and members fall over each other fighting over what's best or why they're right, but here everyone treats product as though it's be insulted or hurt by failing to be their number one. Again, I understand the reasoning, but I think it's bizarre.

After reading Nate's post, the "if you could have only one" question never really seemed valid to me. Seems like asking someone what meal they would choose if they could only have one set meal from this day forward. I am sure I would be sick of even my favorite meal by the end of the week let alone a month or a year from now.

But since it came up, my answer to that question would be Old Joe Krantz

In my experience, at least half the responders will list several.

For me, favorite is easy for a few months, till it runs out: 20 year old Penzance.

I dunno... I've seen the tin art and I'm not sure that I'd want that canned.

    1. HU Director's Cut
    2. Escudo
    3. GLP's Haddo's Delight
    4. L.J. Peretti's Oriental #40
    5. McClelland's Tudor Castle

I need to start expanding my Lat forward repertoire, or I'm in danger of becoming a one-trick pony. SToP's Smyrna and Bengal Slices were pretty nice in testing. I look forward to seeing if they land a spot in regular rotation.

    2.Wessex Brigade Campaign Dark Flake

Carter Hall or Prince Albert for fishing and driving
    Whatever I haven't tried yet.

Until my last order, Newminster English Luxus (17) would have been high on the list, but that batch just wasn't quite right somehow--harsher, pepperier, a bit more damp. It was from a supplier I hadn't ordered from before so next time I'll order from one of the places that sent the stuff I grew to love.

So dry it out a bit if it's a bit damper, that could be giving you the harshness.

You are certainly correct Andy. I have dried it significantly and some of the harshness has dissipated. But the peppery taste and a bit of tongue bite remain, pretty much unabated. My working theory is someone at the new supplier had a bad day and grabbed a pound out of one of the other Newmister barrels--maybe the Ultimate English (52) barrel.
