That's part of the topic of conversation in Fred Brown's December column, but we do end on a happy note and curious question.

Incongruous yes. Grandpa with his Frog Morton is some kind of suspect, whereas weed smokers are leading us into the future. I'm not anti-pot, but I would assert it is more habit forming than pipe tobacco, and it is necessary to inhale pot to make it work, which poses more hazards than pipe tobacco not inhaled, I would assert. I don't think this is a pipe versus pot issue. But tobacco pipes should not be stigmatized and thousands of pipe smoking small businesses should not be driven out of business.

Blame American cigarette companies. Had they not got caught lying and increasing the addictiveness of their product and been marketing towards children, tobacco wholesale wouldn't have such a tarnished reputation. Like, hundreds upon hundreds of years of tobacco history screwed up in a matter of a decade.
mso489 current research suggests that moderate pot smoking is ok for the lungs. Heavy use can result in inflammation and difficulty exhaling fully. THC, it seems, causes cancer cells to kill themselves. Vaporization of the pot is even healthier than smoking it. Of the two, marijuana is the healthier choice to consume. I know, sucks for you old-timers to hear that, especially given the lengthy anti-pot indoctrination you've been subject to (similar to the common person's indoctrination against tobacco these days).
That all said, both are plants and both should have a place in everyone's cellar, should they desire. IMO.

Well there are other ways of consuming marijuana other than smoking it but yes tobacco usage has become more out of place than MJ usage.

P4tty is right.
MJ is only psychologically addictive, whereas nicotine is physically addictive (it causes withdrawal). My pain specialist has been to three symposiums on MJ in the past year and big pharma has big plans.
Tell Fred the State governments individually legalized weed and the Federal government still has it listed as a Schedule I drug, that is, they claim it has NO MEDICAL BENEFIT, the same classification as for heroin. They can and still do put people in jail for possession.
I'm pro weed and I'm not anti-tobacco, obviously. So, to say they are the same people is kinda crazy. Keep grasping at straws Fred. :)

I would assume that anyone actually smoking tobacco or reefer at a Denver bar or restaurant would have to go outside somewhere, but remain on that businesses property. That's how their tobacco law reads, so they will probably just continue to direct all of the smokers together outside. Anyone wanting to remain inside will have to rely on gum, patches, or brownies, or go to a designated smoking club. I would be very surprised if people end up being allowed to smoke grass but not tobacco indoors at these bars and restaurants, and I would also be very surprised if they allow all smoking back inside.

As mentioned, I'm not anti-pot. Weed is very rough on my airway. So if I am not an enthusiast, I'd attribute my attitude more toward that than a generational bias. Au contraire, in my generation, in my circles, not using weed required continual explanations and maneuvering not to seem suspect. Which also may have cooled my sympathies. Seemed judgmental for those who prided themselves on not being judgmental .

No offense but the first half of this article seems rather pointless on a pipe tobacco forum. No one cares about pipe smoking outside of the pipe smoking community. And I'd bet pipe smoking had nothing to do with tobacco being banned in pubic places.
Patty pretty much summed up my thoughts on this topic. I will add that the anti-smoking ad campaigns of the past decade had a lot to do with how a lot of people view tobacco these days. Like those truth commercials that showed thousands of body bags, mannequins, or toy babies lying on the street representing the amount of people who died from tobacco each day, or people on oxygen with a hole in their throats and continue to smoke.
There's also the lobbying that was done to get any movie with smoking slapped with a R rating, and Disney outright banning smoking in all their movies. Smoking use to be cool(which I guess is where pot is now) but now its viewed as nothing more than a disgusting habit that kills people.

It's a little difficult to compare given that the most significant factor in marijuana legalization is due to undeniable medical benefits, which won't ever be a selling point for tobacco. However, it's already been pointed out that forms of marijuana ingestion other than smoking are probably more effective than smoking anyway, and it seems pretty absurd that anyone smoking weed at a restaurant is doing so for medical reasons. So the perception of a double standard is certainly there; but we're talking about tobacco, so good luck railing against it.

I wouldn't say that cigarettes caused the entire negative impact on the tobacco industry as a whole. Sure they may have been a big part, but they also out sold other forms of tobacco, had the most money, and had the most money to lose after being sued. When I was a waiter years ago, and there were still smoking sections. A few of the places I worked had ***PLEASE REFRAIN FROM SMOKING CIGARS OR PIPES IN THE SMOKING SECTION*** placed at the bottom of the menus, and these were national chains! I think there has, and always will be some stigma to any smoking that increases and decreases through time.
As far as pot, don't like it and don't think it should be legal for ALL reasons. One of the largest reasons is that we have drinking, eating, texting,HUA, and even pipe smoking and driving. Do we really need one more thing to to take lives away? I see one study that says its great and there are no ill effects, another saying that long term use makes one crazy, another saying it has more toxins than cigarettes.. Study's are like assholes, everyone has one and they all wipe differently. My motto is leave my tobacco and lungs alone and I'll leave your pot and uterus alone. Just cause I have never liked taking a privilege away from one and giving to another all under the guise of equality.
On a different note a political one last month, pot one this month RULES!!! WE HAVE RULES HERE!!!!!!! :puffy:
:D

I've had better results with capsaicin based pain relievers. And that warm sensation that comes with them!

I'm all for both. I don't smoke pot anymore, but I spent many years doing so. I use those funds for my pipe tobacco these days. Much cheaper this way...

Boy, MSO really struck gold in his last post. Offhand judgementalism is positively rife amongst those who claim "tolerance" and "acceptance". Bullshit artists of the first order, if you ask me. Hell, even I'm very open-minded about the things I like.

Well the new California law doesn't allow smoking in public. Only in the privacy of your own home. It's not like the prohibition of cannabis has prevented people from getting it if they want it. The stuff is everywhere and has been since forever.
