No, this ain't a request for erotic writing!
It's about nosewarmers!
And in particular the chubby type.
I've only recently come around to having an eye for these, I'm late to to game because they seem to be very popular...hopefully y'all can gimme some input.
I'm curious about weight,

many of them seem to be 50g+

are they still comfortable to clench even when heavier because of the stubbiness?
One thing that flipped my switch was looking at old catalogs, the shape used to be more common and easier to find a factory-made pipe, often called a sports or golf...

The best write-up on the shape I've found is this:

http://www.neatpipes.com/blog/built-for-comfort-a-short-history-of-the-chubby-style/&id=7
Also a great read here:

http://www.apassionforpipes.com/neills-blog/2011/5/28/the-nosewarmer-phenomenon.html
The Italians seem to love these shapes, and NeatPipes even specializes in chubbies.
They even have a special name,

"brucianaso"
GLPease was ahead of the curve in collecting them,

http://www.glpease.com/Pipes/Collection/castello.html
But some of them are very heavy,

this L'Anatra is 133g!!!

002-023-0748.jpg

Ardor has a special name for their chubbies too,

they call them "Bucaneve"

this one is 80g

002-004-1256.jpg

And I gotta put a Radice here,

it's become a specialty with them!

004-006-3120.jpg

At this point, I'm mainly interested in chubby billiards with tapered stems, not as common as one would think.
Anyway,

I'd love to see your stubby chubby and hear about what you think of the smoking experience with them...

I love them and am slowly building up a collection. Unfortunately, you are right, most seem to weigh more than 50g which makes it difficult to clench. A wider bit definitely helps in that regard, so seek those out. Some of the designs I have seen have a very narrow bit which makes it difficult to clench. The older Peterson Outdoor series was like this. Their newer series, the Sportman, feature a regular sized bowl and just a shorter mouthpiece, but as wide as a regular mouthpiece.
Peterson Sportsman
Peterson Hunter
Peterson Golfer
I recently picked up a Radice Aerobilliard that is quite nice. Its a heavier piece at 47g but the wide bit makes for an easy clench.

This isn't really the most appropriate place for us all to talk about our stubby chubbies, or anyone elses.

mrenglish - thanks for your input, I appreciate it!

I've been wanting an Aerobilliard too, glad to hear it's comfy.
cmdrmcbragg - LOL! ...and don't bring up pencil shanks either!

I like to think of it as a full chubby, not a stubby one, but hey...
No, seriously though, I have a Rattray's Chubby Jackey. It's a great pipe. Has the horn inlay banding which is nearly indestructable, and will expand with the briar if it heats up a bit too much. Weight is not really an issue, being shorter, it seems to balance out, and clenches just fine. I don't really have smoke in the eyes issues either. I smoke it pretty regularly while driving, as it has a good sized chamber and small overall size, makes it great for the car. Now, here's the catch, I don't think I would buy another stubby. I like it, it doesn't heat up or anything like that, but I have found that longer shank/stems tend to produce a more enjoyable smoke. To my tastes anyhow. Hope this helps a bit.

I have a few of the Big Ben Barbados line, the bent egg and the rhodesian shapes that are great short pipes. I also have a cut down meer that is fairly short and a Eric Paulson Devil Ance. I'm not a fan of long pipes as I am a clencher and smoke when I drive and I am always hitting things when should checking, etc. so I tend to stick to pipes under or around the 4" length. I know there is a Rattray Chubby Jackey in my future, as well as a Radice Aerobilliard too once I have a chance to see one.

I have a several nosewarmer/chubby/stubby pipes and I love them. I don't have a problem clenching them and still find them to be comfortable even though they are a bit heavier. I would have to say nosewarmers, regardless of shape, are my favorite. If you find them to be a problem clenching you should check out bent nosewarmers. They're great. As for the aerobilliards, they are actually light and clenching is definelty not a problem, also very comfortable.

Minister thank you for starting what should hopefully be a great thread - I love chubby stubbies(!). My personal favourite is the very reasonably priced Savinelli Sports 101 which has the billiard and taper features you mentioned and is not too heavy. It's great to clench - with an acrylic mouthpiece to minimise tooth arms and damage.

At this point, I'm mainly interested in chubby billiards with tapered stems, not as common as one would think.

Greg got a chubby thang going on the boards a few years ago but I haven't seen any interest in a while and I've seen prices on eBay go way down. Are these catalogs, pipes from your collection? Anyway a bit off topic but....

Fishin' I love that Becker, I'm a fan of his pipes!!

These two Castello 30's with unremarkable grain and blast are my favorite pipes! Absolute perfect balance in my mouth! 8O

I love chubby Rhodesians, so I picked up a straight, Chubby Radice billiard. I never warmed up to it, it just felt odd in my mouth. Those Costello 30's sure do look good!

Thanks for all the responses everyone!
Good stuff.
I currently have in the works a commission with Ryan Alden to make my "dream chubby" and to my delight he's very into the idea.
He also pointed out that what I was requesting was a pipe very much like the one in my avatar!

:D

These stubby pipes are giving me a stubby chubby.
Joking aside, these are some really great looking pipes. I myself do not own a nosewarmer, too short for my liking.

Got kinda lucky today, not a chubby, but an old 4" nosewarmer Super Sports,

I thought it was gonna go higher and exceed my modest bid, but it didn't!
Unsmoked!
The stampings sure look like Comoy, although the stem looks cheap, I doubt it's vulcanite...

http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Unsmoked-Comoys-Super-Sport-London-MAde-672-Short-Estate-Pipe-/291175773171?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT&_trksid=p2047675.l2557&nma=true&si=cg2cNz60Om68ctmBvn%252FpAfc0aXg%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc
Anybody know anything about these neat little pipes?
They seem to show up a good bit, I've only been looking for these kind of pipes recently, so I don't really know...I always watch in envy as the Dunhill 305 pipes go beyond my limits, but these Super Sports can be had for a much more modest sum...

http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_odkw=sports+pipe&_sop=3&LH_Sold=1&_osacat=593&_from=R40&LH_PrefLoc=2&LH_Complete=1&_trksid=p2045573.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.X%22super+sports%22&_nkw=%22super+sports%22&_sacat=593
Should be interesting for me to see how this thing smokes.

:puffy:
I got a Genod allbriar nosewarmer a couple of months ago and I've been loving it, it's so damn comfortable!

Ah, very nice. You have an eye for the unusual! That is a smart way to get into a nosewarmer style pipe. I'll be curious to hear your smoking review.
