I have found an old clay jar that seals very well. Is it safe to keep tobacco in a clay jar?

Unglazed clay is quite porous - you can use unglazed clay pots as scent diffusers by putting essential oils inside. I would not recommend them for long-term storage.
An awful lot of glazes, on the other hand, contain various toxic chemicals. If you can guarantee that the glaze used was food-grade or food-safe, it should work if you get a good seal - I've seen commercial tobacco jars made of ceramic. I'd still go with glass, myself...

Ill definitely stick with glass jars then, I don't want to risk ruining the tobacco. Thanks for the help :puffpipe:

Clay Pot...You mean like a clay flower pot wit a lid?
Or something your little kid made in art class?
Or something you found at the Salvation Army store?

A clay pot would be kind of a neat place to store tobacco. It's hard to find good clay products these days. Everything is plastic.
You could always put a sample of tobacco in the pot and see how it keeps.

You could always put your tobacco in a small Mason/Ball/Carr glass jar with a proper lid that still fits inside the clay jar.
Kinda like doing the same to store your Prince Albert once you open the plastic tub.

Mmmm, Prince Albert!...
