Storing A Pipe on A Rack

What is better,hanging a pipe stem up or stem down?

That is bowl resting on bottom or bowl resting on top of rack.

I am finishing off another rack with a jar cut out. I am doing

another and want to hang the bowl on the top brace. Also I would like

to do one that the pipes are almost horizontal ( 22 degrees from level).

What are your opinions on these projects.

i always rest bowl down, i am finishing off a 10 pipe cabinet rack now, should be done in few more days, and i always store my pipes bowl down.

I was watching "Dr. No" last week and Bond's boss "M" has a 6 pipe rack on his desk with all the stems pointing DOWN.

I believe and I could be wrong that storing the pipe stem down is thought to keep moisture out of the bowl when resting i believe in England it was the preferred way to store them.

I would guess it is a matter of preference, because I would think the stem down position would allow any moisture to drain down the stem, as opposed to accumulating in the bowl. I would certainly want to swab the stem first before using a stem down stored pipe again.

The official take these days is bowl down, but many old pipe racks have small holes and it isn't possible to fit the pipe any other way than stem down. For me I not convinced one is better than another. More important is resting the pipe for a few days.

I hold with rigmedic. All my pipes are stored bowl downward. If I were to store stem down, I'd feel the need to swab out the stem (with a bit of alcohol). Of course, then I'd have to let it dry out...bowl down.

As long as the pipe has been cleaned after use I'd think either orientation would be fine.

I prefer the bowl down simply because I think it better presents the aesthetics of the pipe.

I think it's like horseshoes. If you hang them with the stems down, all the luck can run out.

i believe in England it was the preferred way to store them.

That probably stems (pardon the pun) from driving on the wrong side of the road. :D

If you run a cleaner through them before storage it don't matter all that much.

I store mine bowl down when I rack them, but a lot of mine are just laying on my desk.

Stem down makes sense to me, but I don't do it: partially because racks I have aren't designed for it. One day I'm gonna make some racks for bowl-up orientation.

Thanks guys,

The rack will be built to hold 2-bowls down,2 stems down,

2- 22 degrees of level -bowl to front and a depresion for pipe cleaners.
