There is a company called Sterling Tobacco that is offering samples. I heard of them and the offer through another forum. There are no reviews on tobaccoreviews.com.

    Sterling Website

I contacted the owner by e-mail with the requisite information yesterday which was returned with a very cordial reply that told me a sample of the 1776 Tavern Blend was on the way.

...looking forward to the mail in the coming week.

One interesting thing I'd read was that once someone becomes a known customer, they can make a phone order and have the product sent out along with an invoice to be paid later. Kind of harkens back to the days of companies willing to do C.O.D.. (D&R is one.)

    Thanks for the heads up.

    I requested Bostonian.

I won't see any communication directed to me here. I'm no longer active at this forum.

When I sent the e-mail and included my information under "blend usually smoked", I said #2015 or about any other non-aromatic. I guess that was reason enough to have the Tavern blend sent, which by the sound of it, I don't mind one bit.

Looks to be nice stout stuff! I love a full flavored smoke. And a big hit of vitamin N isn't too bad either.

    I got my samples today.

The 1776 Tavern Blend is a generous sample at around 2oz. It'll need some drying, but I'm excited because it smells REALLY good.

Also included was a couple ounces of the $15 per lb. bargain blend. It seems to be the type of aromatic hodgepodge that a lot of dealers offer, but looks and smells like it's made up of quality tobaccos.

Included in the envelope was a few pages of information on the different blends and an order form. There's also a page with an offer for the Senior Pipe Reamer. (For anyone interested in the reamer, it's the lowest price I can recall at $17.50.)

I'm impressed. Once I can afford to buy some, I'll be sure to give this guy some business. It was also nice to see that he was willing to spend $2.07 just to get the samples out to me.

If my memory serves me right this is the one that I'll be getting...

"1776 OLD DOMINION (Light Aromatic) The first and still the finest, all black smoking blend. Unsurpassed mildness makes this a blend for cigarette smokers changing to a pipe. Lightly aromatic, charcoal toasted, and 100% Virginia leaf."

Duddly, if you got yours, I should be getting mine soon...

I think so. It's like Prince Albert with pizzazz -- very restrained use of cigar leaf and Latakia.
I normally doctor my PA with Perique, but cigar leaf/Latakia is a very good way to go too.
BTW I was reading about Connecticut shade grown leaf: considered some of the finest grown in this hemisphere.

Yeah I forgot I got that other sample. I opened it when I got it and smelled it....huh...well that's certainly different. Mine didn't seem Half and Halfy to my nose.

It likely churns a good deal. I assume it's the scraps?

Most likely. A lot of blenders will just throw scraps from different blends together and sell it at a discount. Mars Cigars and P&C sell blends like that. One of them even offers the choice of aromatic or straight.

    Arthur,

Did you dry the Tavern Blend out any before you smoked it? I did for a while on the back porch in the breeze and then under a light bulb until it was just right.

For a smoke that didn't gurgle any, I was surprised at how much tar was left behind when I cleaned my pipe.

A tasty smoke all the same, though. Your blog post pretty much summed up my experience too.

I left the bag open for about half an hour before I stuffed the pipe. Got a nice dry smoke. Even in the meer which as I said tends to smoke a bit wet. I did find it left a fair amount of residue in the pipe too.

I don't do Outlook either, but if you right-click on the e-mail link, you can use "Copy E-mail Address" and paste it into the address field of an outgoing e-mail.

    This is his address:

    jackpete@sbcglobal.net

You might be able to write and tell him to disregard the snail mail if you want to.

Welcome to the forums Clarence. I only had Sterling's Country Store Natural, but if that blend is typical of their overall quality, then I've gotta second your opinion. A link to my review of Country Store Natural appears page 1 of this thread.

After becoming aware of Sterling a few months back, I've smoked a number of Jack's non-aromatics and found them pleasing. 1776 is excellent, as are Chairman of the Board and Country Store Natural, but the one I've put in the cellar is Richmond Blender's Choice. The blend components are pricey, but there is no substitute for this level of quality... It wouldn't surprise me to find that Jack and Steve Books source some of the same tobaccos, as I find myself thinking of both these blenders when I smoke either of their blends. If I lived closer, it would be hard to stay out of their shops. As good as the blends are, I can't help but wonder what some of the house blends that aren't on the inventory are like.

How fast would you guys say the turn around was? Does he have a store front? I emailed him tonight and in about two weeks I have to take a run up to Freeport and if memory serves Sterling is somewhat along the way! I would like to try a blend of his out before I make plans to swing by his shop, that is if he has one

If he mails it out at the same pace he did mine, you should have your samples long before you head out for Freeport.

I got my samples (if memory serves correctly) within a week and maybe within 3 or 4 days.

If it turns out Sterling has a brick and mortar store or if on the off chance you get a tour of the warehouse, be sure and post about your experience.

In the meanwhile, enjoy those samples!

Howdy, I am a big fan of Jack Peterson's blends and have been smoking them for almost 6 months. Actually I heard about Sterling Tobaccos and 1776 Tobaccos on this site.

My favorite is British Grenadier - very complex Medium English with a topping that is sublime. Old Dominion is a favorite too. For a straight on Full English 1776 Tavern & Richmond can't be beat. Feel like something esoteric then try Klompen Kloggen - a very unique and complex Danish blend with hint of sweetness.

I especially appreciate the fact - that I can email Jack and he will send me tobaccos and then...Bill Me! That kind of trust harkens to the days of yore when a man's handshake was all you needed.

Currently I have a small ice chest where I just store my Sterling Blends.:-)

Just got my samples in the mail today and dove into the 1776 Tavern blend. I think I have found a good winter blend, it made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. I prefer light in the summer and heavy in the winter with my beer so I figure I will stay with the same in the tobacco realm. Will give the bargin blend a whirl a bit later tonight, and for the price I might just grab a few pounds just to mix in something different from time to time.

I just talked with Jack from Sterling Tobacco, and he informed me that he once had a store front but the government wanted his building so he either A. sold it to them, or B. they took it from him and threw money at him. He didn't really clarify on that one.

At this very moment I am I am deeply involved with a bowl of "Chairman of the Board". Im impressed.
I grew up with a family of tobacco farmers.... ourselves in north Florida and a Uncle in Virginia so I like to think that I know something about tobacco.

My first act upon receiving this sample was to pour it thinly onto a paper towel to examine it throughly. This is quality tobacco, not a small amount of quality high flavor tobacco with the majority being lesser tobaccos , but high quality across the board.
My favorite cigar is the Partagas Decades series...this is tobacco that is aged for 10 years, rolled by one preapproved roller and then only 1 in 1000 makes the cut....This if the type of quality and flavor presented in Chairman of the Board.

The room note is very mild, not overly sweet and pleasant. To quote my wife, " Thats nice!" High praise indeed from someone who is normally opposed to anything that doesnt have a room note not unlike the inside of your grandmothers purse!
The flavor is extremely complex but not "busy"...easily smoked just for the enjoyment while at the same time allowing you the option of dissecting the nuances of the blend for hours if you so desire. The ash is fine and white and there was absolutely no excessive moisture or tar.

I suppose that if I were forced to find something to complain about it would be the amount of Latakia. I enjoy an abundance of latakia and the Latakia in this blend is minimal. Its there but just in the background ever so faintly. However, Chairman of the Board is billed as a Light English as indeed it is.

If you are a fan of a pure tobacco blend and enjoy a rich , full taste I certainly recommend Sterlings Chairman of the Board!

got my sample of 1776 Tavern--it's good stuff--really good--

had a complimentary pouch of bargain tobacco--it had a bitter/sour pouch aroma which carried over into the pipe--it eventually disappeared about 2/3 way down the bowl--tried it a couple time in a couple pipes--same result and bit pretty hard--being frugal, i added it to leavins' and added some burley, and black cavendish--works pretty decent there--

I'm a regular with Jack Peterson and Sterling Tobacco. I've smoked samples of 1776 Tavern, Grenadier, and Bostonian. I've settled on the Bostonian as my go-to smoke. A great blend with great service from a master blender. Highest recommendations in all respects.

    I'm a Customer of Jack's 1776 Tavern and Richmond Blender's Choice.
I've wondered if Jack sources some of his blending components from
the same places as Steve Books does. Both of these guys are at the head of
the field as Master Blenders in North America and don't get the attention
that they would if they were more aggressive in marketing.

Try Royal London Dock ... it is outstanding. Jack Peterson is the man. It's interesting that you put him in the same league as Steve Books. I just discovered Rich's Tobaccos not too long ago and his blends totally rock. I think both Steve & Jack are unsung heroes in pipe smoking industry.

Wow Its Sunday and I followed instructions on their site and within 1 hour I received a nice email saying inasmuch as I am a
died in the wool English / Balkin fan. They went right for the most expensive and most elaborate (Balkan I'm sure)
1776 Tavern blend. I went to T Reviews and looked it up. 5 star reviews exclusively. Then said I now had an account and an Email or phone call would get the tobacco on the way. Now thats marketing.

Clanobucklin writes: It's interesting that you put him in the same league as Steve Books. I just discovered Rich's Tobaccos not too long ago and his blends totally rock. I think both Steve & Jack are unsung heroes in pipe smoking industry.

I'm in total agreement on this one. Both are Master Blenders with a common interest
in quality blends. They rely on word-of-mouth for their marketing, which gets them
a lot of business. Rich's main store in Portland is a real pleasure to visit and
can easily be the reason for poverty. Steve is quite the character that you never
know what he will say next. I don't smoke their Aromatics, but I understand the
wisdom in having them as part of the blends list, since 3 out of 4 Pipe smokers are
Aromatic smokers. I stay with the English and Balkan blends.

    My favorite Sterling/1776 Blends are:

Royal London Dock - Med/Full English w/ a touch of rum

1776 British Grenadier- English with casing - don't know what it it is tastes like cherry, rum, vanilla, and something else. Delicious

Sweet Briar - Aromatic with a cool vanilla taste.

1776 Dominion - Awesome Toasted cavendish with Rum. Very tasty.

Double Eagle - Aromatic - a very cool burley smoke - harkens to the old timey blends.

1776 Tavern - one of the smoothest Full English blends ever. Got a small stash of this for when I want something special.

I think everyone should support Jack too. Give him a call or email. He is a great guy to do biz with. We need more tobacco blenders/suppliers like him. A rare breed.

Since I don't recall ever seeing it reviewed, I requested a sample of Cavalier. Winter time is aromatic time in my house, and I'm always looking for something interesting in that line.

Based on the buzz here, I think I'll go ahead and order a few English blends too and put them by for fishing season. Probably 1776 Tavern and Royal London Dock.

Oh-- and excellent call regarding Rich's, Fred and Clanobucklin. My wife put a two pound assortment from Rich's under the tree for me-- I must have been very good last year.

I want all of you guys to know that I e-mailed Jack (who is a respected friend) and told him of your compliments and he responded that he has signed up for this site. Let's keep our eyes peeled for his appearance on our forums.

I spoke with Jack this evening to get an idea of what sample to ask for. He was entirely gracious. When I offered to pay for the sample or at least the shipping, he very politely declined, and told me that if I liked it, I could become a customer. He's an old style guy doing business in a way very few do these days. Maybe that's something about pipe smokers--we tend to be more relaxed and laid back. After a bit of discussion, I ordered the Old Dominion, and I'm eagerly awaiting its arrival.

Great call rafkasev. Old Dominion is excellent choice. A plummy tobacco with rum & a hint of charcoal/toast - very tasty. I hope folks are not taking advantage of Jack. He is very generous soul and as I said in posts back - we need more tobacco merchants like him. Doing business the old fashioned way engenders loyalty, trust and support.
