My recently purchased 1959 Dunhill Shell Pot has a star stamped on it. I've heard of the star grading system. But I think that is for later smooth pipes. A web search came up with an older BoB thread theorizing that the star stamp on older pipes might be for a pipe replaced under warranty or a particular store stamp.

Does anyone know for sure or have another plausible idea? I understand Dunhill used a lot of stamps. It may be something lost to the mists of time.

I would tend to agree with that, and go a little further to suggest it was mainly the practice of the Dunhill Paris shop that did the star stamp most, this I gather from looking at many old Dunhills over the last couple of years on ebay.fr - the French pipes seem to carry supplemental stamping much more often than their British or American counterparts.
I haven't found anything as of yet inwhich John Loring said of the subject, but I'm still looking.
