Absolutely!! Joshua Tree is a surreal place, lots of hiking trails. Lots of driving trails too, if hiking is not your thing. But do take a pipe to enjoy while in Joshua Tree, its an amazing experience.
Take several. Joshua Tree is stupendous, and the air is perfect for smoking along a trail or two. Did it two months ago.
Unless you're in Santa Monica, people generally don't care about you smoking a pipe. BTW, there's a very nice tobacconist in Palm Springs, I forget the name, with a nice pipe selection.
The best Tobacconist in the Palm Springs area is Palm Desert Tobacco in Palm Desert. It is on the corner of Larkspur and El Paseo. There is no longer a tobacco shop in Palm Springs.

There was a Tinder Box as of a year ago, but even if it's open, doesn't seem worth a stop. Palm Desert is the place. They have Esotericas from time to time, as well as a sizable estate collection.
