OK so I am cleaning some estate pipes one appears to be unsmoked but I cleaned it anyway.

A black steam turned a brownish color when it came into contact with rinse water.

What the hell just happend and is there a fix?

Water will do that to rubber, you just oxidized the stem. All you have to do is polish it out. You have not damaged it in any way.

Thanks. Well this is a first never seen this before as I have always had the plastic type stems

Yep just buff it down and all will be well. This happened to me once after I finished all the sanding and buffing and so forth I ended up having to start all over.
