Ok, its not pipe related so I am guessing general discussion is the place.
I want to try snuff. Where is the best place to get it in the US? A couple small containers to start with. Maybe a menthol to help clear the head in the morning. Any brand preferences over others? Country preferences?
Thanks all.

American blends tend to be rather dry and very high in nicotine. I wouldn't suggest an American snuff to anyone wishing to get into or try snuffs. I would try some of the Ozona/Poschl snuff first. Its lower on the nic scale and moist. Their Lowen-Prise and President snuffs are nice and will clear your head quit well. Samuel Gawith and Gawith Hoggarth make some fine snuffs as well.

Good morning revs

Compliments of last years enactment of the PACT Act the few US internet-based tobacco snuff vendors were forced out of business. So much for economic stimulation.

Sorry for the soapbox, just chaffs every time I think of it.
Anyway... landog is on the money regarding American Scotches.

They were originally intended for oral use, I enjoy them as nasal snuffs.

But.

They are very fine and dry and certainly not for casual or first time use. And they are by and large what you'll find for sale across the counter here in the States. The Poschl line of snuff is also about the only one common in stores in the US and those would certainly be worth a shot.
My preferred vendors are in the EU. There are others but these are 2 to start with.

MrSnuff. Expatriate US vendor forced out, good prices and selection, great customer service.

Toque . Wonderful variety of scents, all natural ingredients used, killer value for the buck, ya gotta check this one out.
Plenty of info at these sites:

Toque brand is very user friendly for the 1st time snuffer. Medium grind and moisture, very easy to take and the scenting is spot on. My fav Toque snuffs at the moment are Spanish Gem and Pomegranate.

Where Toque is a newcomer to snuff manufacture Wilsons of Sharrows is amongst the oldest and for good reason. For something with menthol, these are called medicated, I enjoy the Prime Minister, Honey/Menthol or Crumbs of Comfort.

I think revs was talking about nasal snuff Paul. As for snus the American Camel isn't that bad. The swedish Camel is quite tasty from what I remember.
Anyway talking about snus reminded me about swedish-snus.com, you can buy nasal snuff there from there american vendor.

Went into an antique store on my sales route yesterday. While there, I wandered around looking for pipes or anything pipe and straight razor related. He had an old curio cabinet with several unopened tins of Scotch Snuff. No idea how old it was. Was tempted to pick one up just for curiosities sake and sit on top of my gun cabinet. Not sure exact brand, but the tin had a yellow label and "Scotch Snuff" across the front. Maybe I will grab one today as I go past the shop again.

Would be a great curio to add to any tobacciano collection revs.

Antique shop here has a few as well. They've got one in particular that I've been tempted by, a large glass jar with crimped metal lid of W.E. Garrett Scotch Plain. Full, unopened, in good shape except the tax stamp is marred so as not to be able to read the date.

There are some tins at a local antique shop here as well. They are sealed, but do look REALLY old. Does anyone know if it goes bad? Or does it just dry out?

I have heard of mold from others. This usually in the moister stuff and at that it's the exception.

Usually the oils used in the scenting volatilize as they dry leaving the snuff flat.

Really old sealed tins, I have no experience with such so I don't know if the snuff would be viable or "dry". All instances of dried out snuff that I've run across have been from opened containers.

Looking online, the unopened tins are from a maker that is still around. Conwood Dental mild Scotch Snuff. Next time I am in the area, I will grab a tin or two just to have around for looks. Had some opened ones that looked dry. But, not sure if it is supposed to be that dry. Have been reading up on it and some are meant to be dry.

The American Scotch is very fine in grind and relatively dry when compared to it's European counterpart, the toast. Evan though it starts life being dry, I can only imagine that it would still loose some if not all of it's taste/smell over a prolonged time of exposure to air.
As curios though some of the old tins and jars are pretty cool to have sitting around!

First time I tried snuff it was Fribourg and Treyer High Dry Toast and Macouba. I still like them both and haven't had a snuff from Fribourg and Treyer that I didn't like. Gawith and Hoggarth and Samuel Gawith are also good as is Wilsons of Sharrow.

The F&T Macouba didn't work for me, too floral, but boy howdy their HDT, Old Paris and Princes is right up there with any other grinder.

G&H favorite would have to be the Kendal Brown Original. Damn near everything from WoS has been a winner (-:
