Those are some great pipes. My favorite pipe carver is Jerry Perry of Colfax, N.C., who in turn
learned his trade from an Indiana pipe carver. Jerry shows his pipes at the North Carolina State
Fair in the Village of Yesteryear pavilion, and at the TAPS (Triangle Area Pipe Show) at the
Fairgrounds in April. I have two of his Mountain Laurel pipes, a poker/pot with an impressively
irregular bowl, one of my favorites, and a full bent ball with a line engraving of the Mountain
Laurel and a bird on the bowl. I also have two of his briar pipes, a rusticated billiard straight, and
a light stain bent billiard pocket pipe. All of these are stellar smokers. He keeps his prices within
reach of fairgoers and newbies and is one of the great North Carolina crafts people, though as
near as I can tell, not much known outside the state. His work should be in the crafts museum in
the western part of the state; I petitioned them when I was there, and they admitted it is a missing
part of their collection, with the state's long history of tobacco agriculture.
