Pipe received new from smoking pipes. Not only is draught hole way off center, not that big a deal. But a very sloppily don’t bore. A pipe that should not have gotten through an inspection.

this is not a defect, it is not perfect but are handmade...
the most important is that you can smoke very well and enjoy your pipe..

Wording on Ser Jacop warranty is “Each pipe is guaranteed against any problem not resulting from neglect” It seems Ser Jacopos warranty is just lip service with no actual follow through. The boring is just lazy and not done well. Should not be passed off on a $300 pipe. I also have a photo of the way off center draught hole but posting photos is a pain. Ser Jacopo and smoking pipes, whom I’ve had nothing but excellent experiences with, both have all the photos. Willl let you all know what happens but very disappointed the directions Ser Jacopo is going from what Ive heard.

I’ve also posted this on Pipesmagazine.com and everyone seems to agree with me. Ser Jacopo is not standing by ther warranty. Seems they just want to move pipes and not satisfy customers. God Knows how many pipes I would have gotten from them as I like both their look and feel. And seems to be fairly popular with some pretty avid smokers. But like a lot of companies, they will not stand but their work. I am not happy with the product that they sold me for reasonable reasons. It is a deflect in the pipe and is not acceptable. Very disappointed in Ser Jacopo,. I sent them a follow up email with no response from them.
Maybe five years ago, I bought a SJ on a great sale from SP. It is a beautiful pipe, and seems to be really nicely crafted, but it is the only SJ I have, so I can't generalize much about the brand. At that price level, I'm really surprised to hear it's not just right. Mine has a serpentine shank/stem, kind of a subtle S curve, but it is also a square shank and stem, with a blast finish. So it isn't a simple pipe to make, but it is made with care and advanced skill. I couldn't buy an estate SJ for what I paid for this new one. So I am really surprised to hear of your dissatisfaction and the seemingly indifferent response from SJ. It doesn't sound to me like you are being overly critical. Members will just have to decide if this is a singular problem with one pipe, or characteristics of current production. It's polar opposite to my good experience.

As long as you haven't smoked it, smokingpipes should take it back with no questions asked. I can see Ser Jacopo(p) possibly being skittish about replacing it (though it does seem like the honorable thing would be to take it back), but SP has a very explicit return policy.
Just the drilling being off doesn’t seem like a big deal to me and isn’t a deal killer IMO. How does it smoke otherwise? If smokingpipes isn’t honoring their return policy, that seems a little odd. You want a straight return, no fixing, whatever their policy is on that.

Sorry about the misspellings. I’m typing on my phone with a NYE hangover. Lol. To be fair, smokingpipes said that they would take a look at it to determine if they would credit me. The main issue would be that I smoked out of it 4 or 5 times. Lesson learned. By my main issue was the handling by Ser Jacopo whose response was essentially that is was handmade so shouldn’t be perfect. While I agree with that, the sub standard, sloppy boring that should not have left the factory is a problem. Confirmed by other folks. Ser Jacopo is not standing behind a pipe that is being charged over $300 for.
The general rule is that if you smoke it you own it. That can be a little harsh, and a dealer should,in an ideal world, screen inventory pretty carefully, but that is something that is less common now than it used to be. But markups are still keystone, or close to it.
A draft hole drilled off center or higher than I like is cause for an immediate return of a new pipe. For estate pipes, particularly on eBay, I try to remember to ask sellers that don't offer return privileges to tell me where the draft hole is drilled ("where, in relation to the bottom dead center of the bowl, does a pipe cleaner come out?"). Everyone has their own deal breaker points, that is mine. YMMV
I hate to make any generic statement about Ser Jacopos current (post the death of Giancarlo Guidi) production quality, but I have had one new Ser Jacopo with an unbelievably tight stem/shank fit. It could not be inserted into the shank more than about 1/8 inch. It should never have left the factory. Rather than returning the pipe to Italy, I fixed it with micromesh and beeswax. Proper dead on draft hole drilling was, at least to my eye, a Ser Jacopo hallmark during Guudi's life. I once examined over a dozen new Ser Jacopo lovat's and Canadians, each Castello GG or GGG in kength, and every one was drilled the same - perfect.
I stand ready to correct this statement, but my understanding is that Signor Fraternale's background is in marketing pipes, not making them. That said, I am totally satisfied, in fact thrilled, with the most recent Ser Jacopo I acquired, which I know was made last fall. Please let us know what SP does

Of course, if it burns out during the guarantee period, reputable dealers replace the pipe, but I do not understand the OP to be in that situation.
Even at around $150 I would not be happy with that so at $300 I would be very disappointed. I am a bit fussy that way and have previously sent back about 3 pipes that we poorly drilled (one a Castello Collection....) I do however pick up the "defect" before smoking since I don't want to get into the argument about use or not.
