I had yet to own a Sasieni and have been wanting one for some time. Today I came across a vendor at a flea market who had a Sasieni that was carved with the initials G.E.M. He told me he picked up the pipe at an estate sale in Ojai Ca. of folks with relation to actor, screenwriter and director George E Marshall. I am trying to confirm this pipe belonged to George E Marshall as he said there are pics out there of him smoking this pipe. I was so excited at the $30.00 asking price that I did not notice till I was walking away that it was actually an 8 Dot Sasieni! There is a patent # and the word Smallgate on the pipe. Any info you guys can offer is always appreciated.

Boy, I hate to say it but it looks like a middle school shop project gone bad. I'm sure it won't affect the smoking abilities of the pipe but I can't imagine anyone of note doing that to a pipe.

To be fair, a $30, old Sasieni shaped like a turd would still be a good deal. I personally dont think it looks that bad. I would have bought it as well. Hopefully you can find a pic linking it to him. Thatd be something really cool. Enjoy!

That's a great story, Dixie, and it would be fun to track it down for verification.
As much as I hate to see such amateurish carving on any pipe, much less a vintage eight dot Sasieni, I would've bought this in a heart beat.
According to imdb.com Marshall directed the well known piper Glenn Ford in three of his movies, and it's easy for me to picture them lighting up between takes.

The fact that he was one of the three primary directors for 1962's "How the West was Won" - really an epic Western film - makes it just that more special a catch. (Can't overlook his direction of "The Blue Dahlia" either.)
Great historical find!

That's a beautiful find, enjoy it well.
Considering that this old Rustic 8dot sold for for $772, you found a whopper of a deal!

The stem on your pipe looks immaculate!
Here's an interesting little tale concerning Clark Gable and Sasieni...

I was able to find an archived photo of the pipe on an estate sale website. The estate was that of George Marshall Jr….GEM's son. So far the story checks out. Just trying now to find a pic of G.E.M smoking the pipe. Here is the photo I found online
