I always liked his music, and still have a couple of his albums. He had a very unusual voice. RIP Leon...
One of my all time favorites, Leon Redbone. I always enjoyed his music, almost everything he did, and his attention to melody, lyric, and ease of presentation, while doing intricate and difficult things with music. He was one of these self-invented people who worked hard to downplay celebrity and keep some privacy intact, like Dylan (both self-re-named). Folks may have been Armenian displaced to Cyprus where he may have been born, and then emigrated to Canada, and then to the U.S. Leon steeped in music from earlier decades and payed special attention to New Orleans influences, blues, and forgotten popular songs. I admired his air of mystery and obvious non-ironic joy in the music itself. I'll listen up for Leon on the radio. I think he will outlast many bigger celebrity names.
Redbone is/was one of those artists I didn't try to figure out. I simply enjoyed his distinctive style without knowing why.
Apparently Leon had a complicated family story, and he wisely veiled it in mystery rather than venting and unburdening himself, but chose instead to weave it all into his music. He's so rare in leading a public life in performing without elaborating on his personal life at all. This seems both intelligent and commendable. He let the music speak.
