This evening, like many folks this time of year, the wife and I were out Christmas shopping. It was raining lightly and a little on the cool side, insane traffic, the works. Well... we had just finished picking up some craft supplies for the mother-in-law at "Michael's" crafts and were walking down the covered sidewalk toward "Big Lots" to pick up the stocking stuffers. When coming the other way was a moderately elderly gentleman with at neatly trimmed white beard and wearing a "Scottish Bonnet"/ duffer scuffer and smoking (what looked to be) a full bent Savinelli Dublin. I was smoking some 1Q in my Salisbury Poker.

As we continued toward each other we stopped about two feet apart, shook hands and started chatting. Never laid eyes on him before. We talked, as did our wives, for about a half an hour. The last thing we did was shake hands, wish each other Merry Christmas, then we introduced our selves.

All we did was reminisce.... and chat about pipes, and those who influenced/guided us into our shared passion, also about the personalities of pipe smokers compared to cigarette smokers and people in general.

Bill said he would check out the site. I hope he does... both he and his wife - just nice folks.

You should have gotten his address so that you could go over and check out his collection of pipes that he would likely have given his age. He may have a spare bedroom filled with cellared tobacco too. :D

Hey Bob,

We were at a shopping center about 15 miles from the house. I don't have a clue where he lives. He does go to Skip's once in a while he said. I think he was smoking Sir Walter Raleigh. Though I can't be sure, his pipe lasted nearly through the whole chat.

The word "brotherhood" comes up a lot in discussions about pipe smoking, I think this shows that it's more than just a word.

Awesome story. So far I havent ran across another pipe smoker yet. But i tend to get a lot of compliments as to the smell of my pipe. And occasionally the " you dont look old enough to be smoking a pipe bit"=p.

With out getting too maudlin... It is true about pipe smokers being a brotherhood.

The compliments when they come are always well received.

Thank you Tommy, I enjoy relating my experiences and encounters, with "Brothers in Briar".

"It was just one of those whimsical little occurences that happen when you have so many people jostling around in only a few square miles." (kind of paraphrased from The Blue Carbuncle Sherlock Holmes)

Considering how many pipe smokers we see smoking in public now days, I would say your meeting was about as rare as hen's teeth...

We often seem to find ourselves in the same forums, pstlpkr, and often drawn to the same simple themes of human contact, mutual respect and brotherhood. I find these qualities among pipe smokers as nowhere else. Keep the stories coming and I will do the same.
