Hello one and all, below are a couple of my latest efforts at refurbishing a couple of London made reject pipes. The first is an oval shanked blasted Dublin (?) with a sliced top. I don't know who actually made the pipe but something tells me it might be an Orlik effort. Why it was designated as a reject is beyond me as there are no faults with either the construction nor the finish that I can see. When it arrived here it was merely dirty and just needed a good scrub with oil soap though the stem was pretty well oxidized and deep green in colour. It took much effort to get the stem back to black but that effort was well worth it. The rim was pretty badly singed so I topped it with 400 - 600 - 1000 grit papers afore buffing with white diamond then carnauba wax. I am thinking that at a later date I might sand out the flat portion where the stampings are to get the contrast of wood and black blast as per the canted top of the pipe. The stampings seem deep enough to allow this without obliterating them.

Second pipe is a smooth thick shanked Dublin (?) with some beautiful birdseye & straight grain. This pipe however is rightly stamped reject due to the unfortunate flaws in the briar. As can be seen in the before & after pictures this was much reduced with careful sanding however I was never going to lose them altogether. I really like this pipe and that is due to the thickness of the shank and the gentle curve of the underside of the stem, it looks like no other pipe I have seen.

I forgot to mention the sanblasted pipe smokes very well indeed if a tad warm (though never hot) but the smooth pipe is yet to be tested though I have no reason to suspect it will disappoint.
Regards,
Jay.
PS: If anyone is able to suggest a manufacturer for either pipe it would be much appreciated this end.

The Acme Reject Factory??
No idea, of course, but it's the first "REJECT" I've seen prominently stamped in place of a name. And, they could have left off the "London Made" stamp, no?
All in all, a fascinating trip.....

Indeed John, but the odd thing to me is the blasted pipe is stamped 'Reject' over 'London Made' then further along just to be certain is stamped 'Made In London' over 'England'. Never seen that afore.
Just about to load it up actually with some Mellow Virginia....happy days :puffy:
Regards,
Jay.
PS: Perhaps I'm the clearing house for London Made Acme Reject pipes?

That is very interesting, particularly "London Made", which is an Orlik COM. Orlik didn't use the straight line COM "MADE IN LONDON ENGLAND", so a bit of a puzzler. (or the circle on post-merger pipes).
Nice job on the restorations!

Nice job on the restorations. I'm curiousif you considered rusticating the smooth pipe to eliminate the fills?

Are you kidding...and lose all that lovely birdseye? No fear chum.
Trbradsim, if your pipe is stamped "REGECT" as you state then hang onto it, likely a rare old bird

Jay.

I love this. It's like rescuing a great dog from the pound. Maybe you've stumbled on a new niche market.

You certainly brought out the underlying beauty in these fine old briars. Today nothing would be stamped reject. It would be re-branded and sold at some retailer that didn't sell the main brand. These will be sturdy smokers into the 22nd Century, with a little luck. These are why I never get too snobbish about pipes. The flagship examples are beautiful to behold, but sometimes the rejects are just about as good in their way.
