I think the pipe idea would very very difficult to pull off. You may be safer with religious tats. If you are thinking of "praying hands", make sure your artist KNOWS how to do hands, most dont. Happy birthday on the 31st!
I'd have the Michelangelo from the Sisteen chapel done on your back in invisible ink. That way, 10 years down the road when you'd ordinarily be embarrassed by the tattoo, in this case you won't because it's been done in INVISIBLE ink, and only you know it's there. And hey, isn't that what everybody who gets a tattoo says "I did it for me only"...so you're the only one who needs to know about it, right?
Sorry, I shouldn't tease about such personal stuff, but really, everybody who gets a tattoo says that, you know.
I think you should use the thread (link below) as inspiration. Remember you said something small and its pipe related.

Not sure what you should get for a tattoo, it is a very personal thing. I suggest you make sure of three things especially if it is your first one..........make sure the tattoo means something significant to you, think about placement, not everyone appreciates tattoos and make sure you have a very reputable and well liked artist do your tattoo.
Absolutely, under no conditions should you consider a "discount" tattoo.......you will likely regret it very soon.
Just for the heck of it, I just did this one in Illustrator and 'shopped it on a some unsuspecting arm I found on the 'net:

I have a tattoo and I don't have any regrets about getting it, at the same time I am not saying you should put this on your arm!

I would seriously think twice before getting a tattoo. what part of you body?
+ with MikePhillips !
I like tattoos. I have three. If I regret it later, I could always get it covered up and made into something else
As far as getting and having tattoos, I really think that's up to whatever whatever you want, your body, your call. It's just when people say they are only doing it for themselves, as a reminder, memento, whatever, that it makes me roll my eyes. I'm not saying this is never the case, but in about 99% of the people, they're getting it because they want other people to see it, for various reasons, and I'd just far prefer to hear someone say "I got this one because I wanted the girls to think I'm a bad boy, it's far easier to get them out of their clothes that way" than "I got the skull and crossbones on my forearm just for me".....yeah.
I spent years in the Navy, amongst some of the toughest men who ever walked this earth...knew very few that had tats, and managed to refrain from it myself as well.

Get whatever you want, for heaven's sake. It is for you, regardless of why you want it. If you live to regret it, c'est la vie, that's the beauty of youth.
Old farts have been telling the youth what to do since the beginning of old fartedness.
Tattoos aren't about being tough, so who knows where that came from up above.
Tattooing is an ancient art, and full of mystical and metaphysical meanings for most cultures.
People tattoo for a multitude of reasons. Personal identification, group or cultural identification, rite of passage, and so on.
I have had more people start more positive conversations with me regarding my ink that you would believe. Women seem particularly fascinated with ink, and not always from some desire to have sex with me or whatever. Women appreciate adornment on some primal level, I think.
In any case, don't get in a rush. Hire a quality artist, make an appointment on some day other than Friday or Saturday, and tip well because you are likely to be going back for another. I use the same artists over and over, depending on the style I am looking for. I find it best to take a rough sketch or picture idea to them, discuss with what i am trying to achieve, and let them work their ideas and artistic mind into it.
Get a tattoo of a pipe on your pipe.
Small pipe related . Perhaps a 1/4 inch gate valve. Brass with a green handle would look AWESOME.
I am covered in tattoos, they are all very closely tied into my beliefs in God. I don't care if people see them or not, they are a reminder to me where I have been and where I am going. Take time in your decision, get one that means something to you.
Like someone mentioned already hire a good artist, that is respected. Remember with tattoos you get what you pay for.
I have a lot contacts with in the tattoo world if you would like PM me and I can give you some ideas of artists that would do a great job in your area.
Well if you want to get a tat, get a tat. Dont let other people tell you its a bad idea, or that people only do it to look cool. Dont get one thats hanging on a wall in a shop or in a book. Make one thats for you draw some idea's out on paper and take it in to a good artist not cheap one that all the little kids go to. A good artist will work with your ideas and try and make it what you want and a one off. All my tats are something I took in as an idea.
I was thinking about about getting a pipe related tat, I just haven't come up with an idea. Let us know what you decide to get.
Thanks guys, as far as placment goes it will either be slightly above my shoulder blades close to my neck line but low enough that a t shirt would cover it. Or on my upper arm/shoulder possibly chest an inner forearm/wrist. Religious wise I'm thinking of getting a small cross on my inner wrist or Luther's rose.
I really love the dans tobacco devils holiday artwork.. but I'm not sure where or how I could or if I would really like to incorporate it.
I plan on getting a small Aquarius tattoo as well not sure of placement. I really like the brother of the briar saying
Also Alaskan native by blood so I'm looking into designs by my tribe as well as looking at my English/Norwegian/irish heritige.
No matter what I get it will be in a place where it can be covered up
Google 'pipe tattoo'. There are some nice looking tattoos. As well as some ingenious ones.

Oh and there is a member here, who has a pipe tattoo. It's a pretty bad ass owl with a bent bulldog in it's beak. I'll see if I can find the thread.
Here is the thread I was talking about. You have to scroll down a bit to see the picture.

the only way i would suggest a pipe tattoo is if its a image of your grandfather smoking his pipe or something other than that i wouldnt ink pipes on my body, who knows down the road if you will like it. tats should be symbolic and hold alot of thought prior to being added to your body.
My grandfather did smoke a pipe...time to look through old pictures and see if I can find one with him smoking it haha.
There ya go that makes sense now its in tribute to your grandfather
First things first, you're heading into the military so placement is key. From what I recall you have to make sure it's not visible while in your fatigues or dress uniform. That pretty much means make sure it stays around your bicep or on your back or your pecs, somewhere it won't be visible when in uniform.
As for what to get that's completely personal and don't forget permanent. My first tat was my favorite bands logo on my bicep. I have ideas on improving it, but I definitely should have thought about it more before doing it. The ones I love are my Celtic cross on my elbow for my Irish heritage and my lotus flower on my arm which I got after meeting my now fiance, kinda a blossoming out of a darkness if you will for me personally.
Some pipe related ideas to throw around, you could do a small one of your favorite brand's logo somewhere, or maybe have the artist do one of your favorite tin.
As for religious there's many things you can do. A popular one is a bible verse that's special to you. If you're Catholic you could do your patron saint or a saint that means a lot to you. Another idea would be a religious related painting that means something to you. Just an idea, like having a smaller version of Da Vinci's Last Supper done on your back to remind you that even though Jesus was probably terrified he still went into battle and died on the cross for mankind. That would kind of tie in your committment to God and your nation.
Just a few ideas and words of advice. Here's wishing you a happy early birthday.

Very well stated. One other aspect that has been true of me and others who have inked. It's VERY addictive. We all understand PAD and TAD but this is another version of TAD. The interesting aspect here is that the pain is really awful (for me at least), I hate needles, I'm a big wuss when i have to have my blood drawn... but I loved getting Inked. You get kinda high going through the experience. I started with a little lightening bolt on my left bicep and now I have 16. Can't wait for the next...

if you are heading for the military I would definitely wait until after boot camp..
I should have added...
I have a pipe tattoo. A cat smoking a pipe on my right forearm. You can probably find a picture of it on this forum if you look hard enough.
As well, I have one of St. Adrian of Nicomedia, the Patron of my profession.
As well, I have a whole bunch of other tattoos.
