Do you use them? What are their advantages and disadvantages over non-filter pipes?

The reason for a filter, is to do just that, filter out tar, and other junk. However, I have found them to get gunked up rather fast, which also changes the quality of the tobacco being smoked really fast. For pipes that can take a filter, smoke them with, or without the filter. Won't hurt the pipe any.

Most don't. I have not tried a pipe with a filter yet. Still on my To Do list. Just buy a cob and giver a try with and without a filter.

They're alright for making you feel healthier, or to keep anti-smoking friends and relatives eased off more. But I don't care for them too much.

The main thing the filter does is soak up some of the moisture. Personally, if the pipe is designed for a filter, I normally use them and like them. If it's not, I just smoke the pipe the way it is and don't worry about it.

What brewshooter said. Personally I love my filter pipes. It takes a little thoughtfulness while you smoke to become accustomed to the draw dynamic, but once you've adjusted your smoking they're great.

I always pull them out because I feel they restrict the draw. On the other hand, I bought a new cob and some tasty HH Mature VA and forgot that the filter was in there. I smoked the whole bowl and didnt notice it till I went to clean it. Maybe I will try the filters in the cob for awhile and rethink this...

I have used filter pipes and to me, it changes the taste of the tobacco...make it somewhat dry and plain with less character...the filter-less pipes gives me all the flavor that you're supposed to get when smoking

Most of my pipes are filtered. Drier smoke and it seems to catch a lot of gunk. Also, I herd they were ideal for smoking a particularly strong tobacco where you want to tone the strength down a bit.

My only negative comment is they are sometimes messy to handle

Interesting experience last night. Fired up a bowl of Stokkebye's Nougat that I'd enjoyed before in a MM that I have been neutral about with regards to enjoyment.
This time it did not have the original Medico filter in it with which it was originally shipped. And yes, I'd read about adjusting your sipping speed way down because of the increased draw with filter removed.
Wow! Turned a usually enjoyable smoke into an awful one. Not sure why, since I've been fastidious about cleaning pipes after every smoke.
Don't get this awful taste when smoking in a briar w/o filter.
Could it just be the cob? Think I may rest the MM and stick to my briars, not being sure of the answer to this one. Either that or go buy some Medicos and see if that may improve the taste, since the MM has a very short bowl to mouth distance.
Just my two cents.

The thing is when I don't use a 9mm filter on a 9mm filter pipe I find that sometimes I take a draw and get some tobacco bits in my mouth!! Not nice at all. Thinking of getting a 9mm adaptor. Savinelli pipes come with the plastic adaptor though, so definitely use that if you don't want to use the balsa ones.

At the risk of being tossed out of the club, I like and use filtered pipes. There are some tobaccos that I do not enjoy unless I smoke them in filter pipes. Virginia forward blends in particular. Latakia and aromatics, no difference, so I smoke those without filters. My experience is that a filter is only good for about 3 smokes, then it must be changed.
