This chubby 999 popped on eBay last week and I was able to grab it. I just finished the restoration, with details below.

According to Mark Irwins Peterson blog, this nomenclature was used between 1922 and 1938.

Beautiful pipe and great resto job. Enjoy!
The BC Sweet I uploaded recently looks a lot like it, doesn't it?

I hope it smokes as as good as this one surely does.

Good looking pipe. Peterson 80s and 999 were my first briar pipes around 100.00 back in 2005. From 199 to 2005 I had two meerschaum pipes and one Benton brand bulldog pipe.

I emailed Peterson about the missing "chimney" and rec'd a reply this morning. I have to send them the stem and they will fit a new chimney to it. It smoked so well without it, I'm tempted to let well enough alone but would also like to have it 100% intact. Mark Irwin says the chimney is a plus, the jury is out in my mind. This is the chimney from my 9BC.

Al, even if you never use it having the chimney will increase the value of the pipe. It's a pretty rare shape to begin with and a complete pipe will make it truly unique. Just my .02 cents worth. Dutch

I decided against sending the stem - it's took big a risk to send it two ways overseas. Should it be lost in the mail, even it I insure it, I'll never have the original stem. I'm not selling that one, so resale isn't a concern (hopefully for a long time).

SS --- I have one of those widgets lying around somewhere that's from a similar-sized pipe, so will probably fit. You can have it (if I manage to find it).

Ha, George does keep bailing me out. Sure, if you uncover it, I'd love to have it for the stem.
Btw, that is one beautiful button on your 999!
I should have added this link to my write-up on Reborn Pipes, Mark describes the origins of the "John Bull" moniker.
