I'm curious if anyone owns, or has seen for sale, the old-fashioned style of cherrywood pipe. I'm thinking of the ones that were usually poker-shaped and still had the bark on the wood. I don't necessarily want one, but realized that I hadn't seen this type of pipe in a long time, and wondered if they're still around. I do see cherrywood pipes with a more conventional smooth finish, from inexpensive Missouri Meerschaums to costlier ones. I own one of the former myself and like it for flavored aromatics-- nothing ever seems to "ghost" that pipe.

I haven't seen the old time cherrywood with bark in all my scouting for pipes.

It seems the term has been taken over partly to name a pipe shape done in

briar. In many pipes, it is disputable if it is a poker or cherrywood, although

I guess a pure poker is straight with a flat bottom bowl not cut at a slant.

When you cut the bottom slanted, and bend the stem, you get into

cherrywood shape territory, but most of these now are made of briar,

I think. I'd love to see one of the cherrywood pipes with bark, online

or in person. Sounds interesting.

You can buy some cherrywood pipes... I have a couple churchwardens that are made of cherrywood... They are a bit cheaper and smoke decent.... I would pick briar over cherrywood any day, but still cool to have in your collection.

I have a Ropp Supreme. The Supreme line wasn't in the traditional poker shape, and mine looks pretty much like this:

Many cherrywoods have a tenancy to end up with loose stems, but other than that I find them to be good smokers. Ropp doesn't make pipes anymore, but there are estate Ropps all over eBay and you could probably pick one up for under $35 with shipping.

Those are really cool! I don't know if a Ropp will move to the front of the line

for my stable of pipes, but I think they have a great aura. I admire the down-

to-earth look of these, bark and all.

Thank you all for your responses and pictures! Those are all interesting looking pipes. And nsfisher, you not only have a cherrywood pipe, but you also seem to have a Quaker parrot on your shoulder. :D
The Ropp that troutface has there is closest to what I was thinking of. I remember seeing them at a tobacconist's shop around 40 years ago. I've never owned a Ropp pipe, cherrywood or otherwise, but have always heard good things about them.

I picked up an old Ropp years ago, and I still smoke it to this day. It is a decent smoke if you take your time and go slow.
