I've smoked Nightcap a few times and it's ok. I keep some around and smoke a bowl every couple of weeks.

I just tried 965 and wow, I like it a lot better. Might be because of my fondness for cavendish, I don't know, but 965 is going into my top 5 blends.

It's been awhile since I tried 965, must have liked it because I cellared some. I've never tried Nightcap even though so many like and recommend it. So many blends and so little money ...

965 is my "meat and potatoes" tobacco.......I've only smoked a pipe for 2 months so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

I found Nightcap a bit harsh so 965 suits me better.

They're both great smokes but I prefer Nightcap and, in general, am not a big fan of Cavendish.

I do keep some unflavored Cavendish around (Green River Black Cavendish) for my home blends but use it extremely sparingly.

965 is one of my go to blends. Nightcap is OK, but I can take it or leave it.

I like the 965 more than Nightcap, but I will happily smoke either one.

If you liked 965 you might want to give Aperitif a try.. it's replaced 965 in my rotation.

965 is a daily smoke for me. I think the magic ingredient is the Brown Cavendish, which is unique to 965. Nightcap was way too strong (but a 50% mix of Night Cap & EMP is pretty darn good).

965 when the mood for Latakia strikes, smoke mostly VA. I find Nightcap slightly overwhelming.

Oh yes, and Aperitif is like 965 with more "oomph", or a sweeter, more tolerable ( for me ) alternative to Nightcap.

Nightcap is a Traditional Latakia English blend and 965 has Cavendish, Latakia, Oriental/Turkish, Virginia.
So Cav makes little less strengh. That's we feel little easy, soft and smooth to smoke.
I like 965 most of times but sometimes after heavy dinner Nightcap make fantastic smoke.

Nightcap, I've tried 965 many times to see lots of others do and I just find it boring.

When I begin smoking a pipe I found the lore and fame of 965 to be too tempting not to try it right away. I remember at the time I was sampling some Latakia blends to understand their general profile.

My open tins at the time, if memory serves, were Red Rapparee, FM on the Bayou, Brigham's English Mixture (in addition to 965). I cellared FMOTB (and later also fell in love with FMOTT), and plan to Cellar RR. I totally failed to understand 965's reputation (to my disappointment). To me it tasted bland and left me waiting for more of something... Anything! I plan to get another tin maybe in year or so to revisit; maybe my palette develops further or something. I

have a tin of Nightcap in my cellar that I plan to try soon so I'm hoping the reputation of that one doesn't disappoint me too (I also have a tin Aperitif in my ever growing tower of blends to try that I already purchased :D).

I never understand why Dunhill Standard doesn't get more attention. I'll take it over either 965 or Nightcap.

I haven't had any luck with either but after trying some wet Star of the East the other week (I wanted to add moisture before cellaring) and finding the flavour greatly diminished, I'm second guessing myself now on whether it just wasn't dry enough (noob mistakes, *sigh*).

Somebody on here once wrote that Nightcap should be called "Nightstick". I'm more inclined to believe that's the truth after just taking a quick whiff off a fresh tin. I can't stand the smell of the stuff. The little sample I was given seemed to smoke me out of my bedroom without ever being lit.

MM 965 is excellent. I only tried a sample of it, but it was quite flavorful and not at all overbearing.

My first try with nightcap was overwhelming on an empty stomach- lesson learned. I remember standing up and wobbling around. Lol

965 during the day, great smoke

    Nightcap after dinner-another great smoke

I never understand why Dunhill Standard doesn't get more attention. I'll take it over either 965 or Nightcap.

Jud. Standard never really did much for me, found it kind of bland

And here we are 2 years later and still, nothing beats 965 for an English blend. Nightcap is still excellent and I did find GLP Quiet Nights to rate up there with Nightcap. Nothing beats 965 though.

MM965 was my first english I ever smoked and I got hooked with it. Very nice taste and it´s really an allday smoke. Nightcap I prefer to smoke at night as the name recommends..It´s more complex and stronger so I have to relax more and be more focused while I´m smoking.

Whilst I enjoyed both I preferred Nightcap over 965 as it's richer and feels more decadent. It's been a while since I've smoked either as they're not favourites.

There are some good matches if these old favorites disappear under the Dunhill name. "Matches" is a relative term, but sometimes the match is different from but as good as the original.

MM965 was my "big jar blend" until Dunhill stopped shipment to the States some years back. Then switched to GL Pease's Westminster. Still very much enjoy MM965. Night cap is good, but isn't "up there" for me. Have dozen or so tins of each in the cellar.

I prefer Nightcap for its strength and richness. 965 isn't bad either but I guess it depends on your taste: if you like cavendish you will also like 965, if you're more a perique guy instead Nightcap could be a better choice.

965 is my favorite tobacco, closely followed by nightcap. Both will be sorely missed when the last tin is gone.

I've been wanting to try both of these, but haven't as of yet. Looks like by the almost even split between how many of you like one over the other, I'll just have to buy both tins before they're gone to give them a try. If I like them enough, then I'll worry about "match" blends to buy that don't look like they'll disappear anytime soon. On that note though, how are Sutliff's 965 and Nightcap matches? Anyone besides JimInks gave the Sutliff matches a go?

I really loved Nightcap. 965 was ok but nothing more. Then suddenly I didn't like Latakia anymore. Almost over night.

I don't care for either one of them. I don't like sweet latakia blends, and I don't want to be hit over the head with latakia, either. I do smoke some Standard now and then, and a fair amount of MM1938.

Four yrs ago, when I first started both pipes and this forum, it popped out at me that there were a few essential experiences I should try to have..
    Nightcap
    Escudo
12 doz or so vapers (ya, I'm exaggerating, slightly)
    a Dunhill
    a Meerschaum
    C&D Burley
    Codger Blends
as for blend preferences, those change depending on mood, time of day, setting, and plain old whim, and I like having a variety around to keep my palate energized.

Nightcap was the first 'real' blend I bought and have strong memories of it, both of it incinerating my tongue, and me learning patience and breathing. I've cellared 5 or so tins.

I've never tried 965 but I think I have a tin of that as well. One of these years I will get to it.

Nightcap > 965. Over the past year my palate has gravitated toward Va/VaPer blends. So if I want anynlatakia/English I want it I big and strong and in my face. Thus, I have cellared mainly Artisan’s blend like noted above and Old Ironsides. That said, I do love EMP, but that is kinda Balkan to me. And if I want a Balkan, I will grab Penzance every time.

Well, I reckon I'll find out if I like Nightcap at least. Just made an order from SP's for a tin and a couple bundles of cleaners, a couple more Czech tools and some more softee bits. Should be here tomorrow or so the tracking tells me. Do you smoke Nightcap during the day, despite the name and effect?

I never thought Nightcap was overwhelming with nicotine. It is the flavour that is so rich and satisfying, that any other blend will seem bleak afterwards.

Well, I don't know about 965, but my Nightcap was here when I got home today. I popped the tin and set out a bowl to dry for a before bedtime smoke. I like this blend. Very satisfying. It took almost a full bowl for me to experience the full flavor though, but now I know what I'm looking for.

I would prefer 965. It was my first english blend and I love it. I´m not a real fan of perique in english blends. It neutralizes some way the nice taste of the orientals.

They are both great. I smoked them before the recent incarnation and enjoyed both. However I recently restocked 965 because I enjoyed the Cavendish quite a bit. I do think new tins need age and then some time to rest / air after opening.

Smoke both, but more Nightcap now. In fact had some earlier today.

Opened first tin of Nightcap about 18 years ago and it smelled like a cross between burning tires and railroad ties.

Smoked it, didn't taste much better, more like diesel fuel and soured leather.

Didn't pick up another latakia blend for five or so years afterward. Now, 1/2 my rotation is latakia based.

I was thinking the same thing so I picked up a tin of most of those available just so I can at experience them. I don't feel the need to stockpile though.

Another take: Why chase down mediocre blends that are disappearing rather than sample some of the hundreds (well, at least dozens!) of better English blends, most of which will be available for years to come? Many of which are made by American firms....

I like 965 but nightcap is my bread and butter. Delicious, consistent and satisfying in strength. I have four quart jars aging for almost a year now. I can't wait to smoke it soon and I'll be sad when the last of it is gone. I like Presbyterian and John Cotton now.1 and 2 both more than 965 or emp.
