I have a couple one of them is a Moretti. Marco does awesome work with it and you won't be sorry. Treat them like meerschaum and you'll have a fine smoking pipe for the rest of your life. Also Marco does a tapered tobacco chamber which is a real treat to smoke.

Here's a monster I just finished as a commission- one of the largest blocks I've seen- almost 3.5" thick...Morta has a couple of interesting characteristics- it is MUCH slower to shape than briar...and it's extremely brittle (after all, the original material before it soaked in a peat bog for a few thousand years was oak). It's also light for the size- about 89 grams.Finished with a little antique ivory, black buffalo horn, and green ebonite...

Have heard morta for a while but never tried one.

Just curious, but not sure if anyone can answer:

Who are among the first few makers that utilized morta as pipe making material? And approximately when did this happen?

Wow didn't know about Peterson used them and let alone that long ago.
But I do know Russ Cook used the American Morta/bog oak found at the bottom of the Great Lakes. Maybe the first for that type?

I just worked out my first pipe commission ever with the venerable Mr. Tinsky. It's going to be one of those beautiful cherrywood shapes from Christmas 2013 in black morta. I'll be sure to post pictures and a full report when it comes in.

That is a nice Moretti. Zach, love that green stem against the black and white on your pipe. What you call interesting characteristics in Morta I call PITA.

Chris Askwith does some beautiful Morta pipes too.
In terms of smoking them, I found the first bowl or two really rough. Sort of a creosote taste. After that, it calms down significantly. For a long-time, it adds a little smokiness to anything in it so I found it pairs best with English or Perique forward blends. After 30-40 bowls, all of that seemed to die off and it's a pretty neutral - almost meerschaum like.

Moretti mortas are fantastic and Marco is a great pipemaker to work with. Also, look at Luciano morta pipes for a great value from Luca at Neat pipes (no affiliation).
Below is a Moretti morta 320EX Marco made for me.

Zack, that pipe you made is beautiful, are you sure you made it? lol just kidding buddy. Now that you have made one, you need to make one for yourself so I can try it. I have been very hesitant in trying a morta pipe because of the smokey characteristics people always mention. I do not smoke English blends and I am afraid the smokiness will over power most of the blends I do smoke. Now that you can make one, I can try it for a couple of months and if I like it you can make me one for baby sitting Dolce. :nana:

The morta poker Marco made for me is the best smoker I have.

It's extremely light and smoked great right from the first bowl.

fish, those are beautiful, freaking Zack has been holding out on me as he knew I would make him make a pipe for the both of us.
Zack, you dog, once I get better you know I am going to be baby sitting Dolce for you, so once you get back from Chicago, you better get to work on our Morta. I want either a Dublin or an Apple shape and I expect nothing but your best Ivory for the inlays. I really like that green stem so you can add one of those as well. Does anyone have any other things they would like to see on mine and Zacks new Morta pipe? Don't be afraid to chime in, the more suggestions the better.
