Actually smoking some Treebeard at the moment.

For me, the Isengard is the shining star, the Old Toby the most forgettable. Haven't smoked the Longbottom, but would concur on the other two.

    Good review.

For me , the only one I plan to order more of is Treebeard. That one i liked a lot. The others were good but not all that good for my tastes.

    Thanks again Gentlemen.
    I try to be honest.
I really believe Mr. Bob Schafer has done a magnificent job creating all of these blends.
Some to me were near misses, but hey they are quite tasty.

I've only smoked the Shortcut To Mushrooms and think it is amazing. Click my link there and look what I put in the description for flavoring. (Sometimes when you are doing tedious data entry, you need to have a little fun.

Thanks for taking the time to post those reviews and link them up Lawrence.

I've had a pipe or two of STM. It is my favorite of the series, then Treebeard.

One of the reasons I like these forums is - it is always exciting to read a "Eureka" kind of an experience. Lawrence based on your review on "Old Toby" I immediately went out and smoked a bowl (as I had some stashed).

    Here are my impressions:

    Vanilla...Check
Grass...Grass? You mean like pot? Or mowed grass?...hmmm...grumble grumble...balderdash! Hmmm exhale through the nose...Okay! There it is! ... Check
Perique...Check (uh, sort of - got to be the lightest touch of this spice I have ever encountered in a blend.
Multi Layered... with flavors of hickory and whisky...Check!
Cool smoking...yup! Check and double Check!
Overall - I like this blend a lot and glad I had the foresight to order 4 ounces from the sample they sent me. Old Toby goes perfect with a Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. Salud Amici!

Shortcut to Mushrooms and Ruins of Isengard were my favourites. Treebeard was decent in the sample pack, but when I re-ordered an ounce of it, it didn't seem the same. Then again, I might have mixed it up with Longbottom Leaf. Old Toby was my least favourite.

Just as a side note, if you are planning on trying them, don't go with the sample pack. Instead buy an ounce of each, it only costs about $6.00 more and you get a much larger sample than the sample pack provides.

Either way, you can't go wrong with these blends.

Yeah... not dissing samplers but.. it's simple math. There's another "sampler" from one of our beloved sponsors, and it's $3 more just for the honor of adding (4) 50g tins to your cart lol

I get the feeling from your review that you didn't like Treebeard so much? But still gave it a solid 4/5?

You didn't say you didn't like it, but I'm trying to read in between the lines because you talked more about movies and drinks than the tobacco lol.

Do you still stand by that review?

Thanks for the reviews Lawrence ... I think I need to give Treebeard a try.

I'm tempted to order Longbottom Leaf and Old Toby just because they're smoked in Lord of the Rings.

Only one I've tried is Shortcut to Mushrooms and it is very good.

I was thinking of sampling the entire series now that I know its $6 more to get about double the smoking enjoyment I am placing my order. As soon as I get Paid.

If you can't pack it, light it, and smoke it then why do it. It's a dieing art that must be rekindled in all of us as fortold by our forefathers.

I just had a sample of shortcut to mushrooms first in my Peterson Rock of Cashel 221 I like the earthy flavor but I have never been one for english blends. It smoked rather hot and I decided for my seconf bowl to use my pineer calabash. God that's a good smoke. Deffinetly better as a cool smoke. I don't have any of the other midddle earth series to compare it to but I think this would be a good end of the day smke for me.

I have an ounce of Mushrooms and an ounce of Treebeard on the way that shipped Friday. I rarely read fiction, but JRR Tolkein is the reason I started smoking pipes. I must have read The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings fifteen times. I have a small short straight Butz Choquin I bought specifically because of the Ruins of Isengard chapter. I must have also read The Sillmarillion ten times.

"Blue was her raiment as the unclouded heaven, but her eyes were grey as the starlit evening; her mantle was sewn with golden flowers, but her hair was dark as the shadows of twilight. As the light upon the leaves of trees, as the voice of clear waters, as the stars above the mists of the world, such was her glory and her loveliness; and in her face was a shining light."

    Yeah, baby.

PS I think Bilbo owned one of those TRGs; it looks exactly like something he would smoke.

Not Galadriel, but Luthien, Galadriel's grandmother. It's from the Silmarillion, not Lord of the Rings. The Silmarillion is ancient history starting from the creation of Middle Earth by the gods. It explains why Dwarves love stone and is an awesome read.

Just got Mushrooms and Treebeard. Ordered them Friday, and they arrived Tuesday (and Monday there was no post!) so good job justforhim.com.

Mushrooms definitely tastes creamy and is excellent. Am I the only one that thinks it actually tastes like mushrooms? I actually liked Treebeard a bit better, not because it was higher quality, but I think I preferred the flavor a little bit. I don't know how to describe them like you guys: raisins and currants, with earthy undertones and a hint of vanilla, with etc.

Both are worth the price. I got an ounce of each and the ounce seemed quite a bit smaller than the ounces I watched my B&M weigh, but before shipping, they cost $1.75 less ($3.25 as opposed to $5). With shipping, a bit more. Shipping to TX was $6.60, the same for two ounces as for five, so you might as well get more than the two ounces I got.

I smoked the Mushrooms through a Group 1 Butz Choquin short straight billiard, and the Treebeard through my SMS Meerschaum straight Dublin. Will try blending them with my cheapo Cherokee Mellow and see what happens.

"Hail Gurthang! No lord or loyalty dost thou know, save the hand that wieldeth thee. From no blood wilt thou shrink. Wilt thou therefore take Túrin Turambar, wilt thou slay me swiftly?' And from the blade rang a cold voice in answer: 'Yes, I will drink thy blood gladly, that so I may forget the blood of Beleg my master, and the blood of Brandir slain unjustly. I will slay thee swiftly. And Túrin set the hilts upon the ground, and cast himself upon the point of Gurthang, and the black blade took his life."

Holy wow I didn't read all of seanz's post!

My guess is he was either an extra in the town of Bree, or during Bilbo's birthday party.

Did you know that Peter Jackson has a cameo in the scene where the hobbits arrive in Bree? I think he put himself in someplace else too, the battle of Helm's Deep I'm pretty sure

I just tried the Whiskey Biscuit Gravy in St. Louis and it was tremendous. A little more depth and variety than Shortcut to Mushrooms--it uses Shortcut as a base.
