Meerschaums. Sigh. I have had a couple over the years. I just recently traded Uncle Arthur for a pipe and gave up my last one. A beautiful vintage "Skull" pipe. Trouble is I can't rid of the damn things. No sooner than I got rid of my last one - I got two more from friends! 1 is an image of someone famous. The other is a fun Bachus pipe with a long stem. Now the funny part is ... I have coveted the Bachus Meer for sometime but either wasn't in funds at the time of the "jonesing" or was off Meerschaums. And well here I am with a lonnng stemmed Bachus Pipe. I would love to see other meer pipes posted...just to see other carvings as well. Meers are cool smoking pipe of fossilized clay - giving probably the purest smoking experience of tobacco. Needless to say while I love 'em...I prefer wood/briar. Anyhoo post a picture guys and gals - here is mine:

Made by Sethi. Total length is around 7-9 inches.

I have yet to get one, I am a fan of the classic shapes.

Wow! Beautiful Guys...keep 'em coming! I love the images - some beautiful carving in all of them. That's one thing that meers are known for amazing shapes and images. Here is the Meer Uncle Arthur got from me:

I have two, the one in the foreground is an IMP and the huge one behind it is an Altinok. I'm not a big fan of intricate carvings in my own pipes, but I do like to look at other peoples artwork.

This is my $14 Meerschaum. I got it for $10.99 on Ebay and had to use $3 in parts to fix it. My favorite pipe to smoke and I smoke it almost every day!

Wow, I didn't think the lady and hounds one was that big. The IMP looks like a monster. On a tangent, I have an odd hankering for any sculpture of Artemis (Diana in Greek) who was often in the company of hound dogs.

This is what got me started: She was sometimes known as Cynthia, from her birthplace on Mount Cynthus on Delos. I just see myself in a lot of the mythology surrounding her. Mom purposefully named me Cynthia Dawn so that my name would mean "a reflection of light before the sun comes." Then God brought me a child named Alyssa Dawn which means exactly the same thing, but hers is an Arabic form of the name. She was the only one of our kids we didn't rename when we adopted them.

I just use the dry paper towel twist after each smoke and gingerly pick at any cake with the spade on my Czech tool. Once in a moon, I'll soak a paper towel with Everclear and clean it, but less is more IMO. Of course, I take it light on purpose since I have an uncanny knack for obliterating fragile objects.

Don't have many meers. Typical Calabash with meer bowl, maybe I'll carve Artemis and some hounds and sell this one to Cyndi, a meer lined Hilson Fantasia from the '70s and a small meer for sampling odd tobaccos, and short smokes

Happy, happy, joy, joy! I now join the ranks of proud meerschaum owners. Yesterday was my anniversary, and at breakfast my wife presented me with... some beeswax. When we went out for a nice dinner last night, we wandered to both of the downtown Victoria B & M's and chose this beauty:

Not a very fanciful shape, but it crossed two things off the bucket list: a meerschaum and a Canadian shaped pipe.

This is my newest meerschaum. My mom bought it for me as a belated birthday present. I'm sitting here smoking some SG Firedance in it now.

Edited to add: I don't know who the carver is. There are trinity rings stamped into the sides of the bowl and that's all the markings.

I've got a small sherlock style meer, as a matter of fact just smoked it last night. Meerschaum is made not from clay but petrified sea foam. It acts as a natural filter and thus should never be cleaned with alcohol or anything other than water as the meer will absorb the alcohol and lose some of its capacity for filtering, or so I've read. Also it is important to not let too much cake build up in the bowl as it may lead to cracks.

I know what I need, smoke, I can't recall the last time I tasted it....Gandalf in the mines of Moria.

"we shall have to share pipes, as good friends must at a pinch'....'I keep a treasure or two near my skin, as precious as rings to me. Here's one: my old wooden pipe. And here's another an unused one...He held up a small pipe with a wide flattened bowl, and handed it to Gimli. 'Does that settle the score between us', said Merry. 'Most noble hobbit, it leaves me deep in your debt."

I only have one Meerschaum pipe left but it is by far my favorite I have ever owned. A gentleman in my local pipe club decided he no did not really care for meerschaum pipes and traded me a tin of G L Pease Quiet Nights for the pipe. Needless to say I got a hell of a deal haha. As best I can tell it was probably carved by an apprentice as it is marked M. Y. and I have never heard of that carver (maybe I am just ill informed). That being said if it was an apprentice it was a skilled one at that.

Charles, I've had a love/hate relationship with meers since taking up the pipe 6-7 years ago. I've had quite a few and while I love the look of the intricately carved ones, I too as others said, enjoy my standard shaped pipes.

I also have found that most meers I've had just don't have an open draw like I prefer and can be a bit fiddly to get a good smoke out of. It has to do with the small hole in the screw in tenons that most meers use.

Luckily I have a pipe smoking buddy here that loves his meers and will buy every one that I don't like, so I have a market for the ones I buy and just don't reach for often enough. And I don't lose money on them either.

I did however find one at the "TAPS" pipe show in Raleigh NC a couple years ago and it has a slide tenon just like a briar and is a pretty standard shape. I do enjoy smoking this one. But, I can't find a picture of it.

I also picked up a nice antique Bulldog with gold adornment and authentic amber stem that has some beautiful color. It was well smoked and loved by someone and is from the late 1800's. If only it could talk, the stories it could tell.

Here is another that I still have..... It's a Kaywoodie 4-hole stinger meer.... only one I've actually seen and held in my hand.

Unclearthur, That pipe came to me in that condition from ebay for $35 shipped. Funny how we set pipes aside and forget them. This post made me look for my meers. (Most pipe stuff still packed from a year ago) I dug the antique one out and am puffing it right now....... Keep them coming guys, I like looking at the meers.

This is what I have. Got it "free" with a pipe stand I bought. Lady didnt think it was a real pipe so threw it in I hate the draw on this pipe. The stems airway is too restricted for the pipe. Oh well, it was free!
