I purchased my first meerschaum from a local antique shop and couldn't be happier. I understand these pipes are fragile, so what do I need to know in order to maintain it?

Roth has hit all the right points.
I can only add from my experience, I never, ever, remove the stem to run a pipe cleaner through the pipe. I leave the stem on. I also never, ever use Everclear or any other pipe cleaning fluid in the pipe.
My only other advice is to use a chamois cloth (I'm overly cautious, I know) to handle new meers. Once they begin to take on that golden patina, I then no longer worry about handling with a chamois and smoke as normal.
Sweet smokers, indeed!

My understanding was that one of the reasons to keep applying wax was because as the pipe heated up and liquified the wax it also would draw out the tars and oils of the tobacco to the surface.
A way to expedite the coloring process, while protecting the pipe at the same time.
There's a ton of articles on this site by Fred which you should read as well.
A simple search should yield some very informative results.
Good luck!

Thanks, all, for the advice.

Thanks especially for that. My instinct was telling me the same thing.
