Don't remember ever seeing anyone mention this here, but I thought it was worth a note.
I've discovered over time that I much prefer Virginia blends and straight VA flakes when smoked in an oil-cured pipe. For me, there's something about the oil-curing process that really accentuates everything I love about straight Virginias. They become noticeably sweeter and richer.
It's hard to know which companies use oil-cured, as opposed to air-cured, briar. But I know Dunhill does (or at least did). And Radice has a line of oil-cured pipes that they clearly identify.

I think you're on to something Bob. My VA flakes smoke best in my Wileys, which I believe are oil cured. It could also be the conical bowls that supposedly favor flakes. That estate Radice I posted last week is also giving me the same rich flavor that I get from my Wileys and it's oil cured. Mere coincidence ? I think not.
