For several months, I have been searching many online pipe shops for a really nice Lovat and I have been striking out.
I am looking for a more classic shape with a light stain or a blonde blast/rustication.
I want one between 5-51/2 inches and a comfortable saddle bit. I don't want a big Lovat. A size 3-4 would be ideal.
I really haven't seen anything that strikes me except this Masta Patent Blonde Blast at Blue Room Briars - but it's an estate and I want new. I want to be the one to color my own pipe etc...
SP has a nice Musico but it's $300+
Anyone see any nice Lovats lately?

I have been looking at that Radice... It's in my top 3... and I also have that bare bones Morgan ear marked... I was wondering if anyone has had experience with those Morgans... I like the guy who is behind the company...
I don't do Savs... I have one hand carved Autograph, but my others haven't been keepers...

My only Lovat is a Johs, which is a nice size, light weight, with plenty of bowl, semi-rusticated, and a nice trim design, if you like Johs work. He goes in phases, sometimes three Lovats offered, sometimes none. Mine is maybe seven years old and has worn well and smokes good.

LT,
I like the Lovat a lot. Yet in my eye it just suits a longer shank, as such: a 6" to 7" pipe. If you change your mind away from a stubby Lovat, consider a classic Cavicchi Lovat.

Just came across these on the Danish Pipe Shop website. Made by one of Tom Eltang's students in his shop and smaller in size compared to some other makers:
Bay Denmak
Nice looking lovat, love that blast and rim grain with the brass.

I believe PS Studio also has some, although, leaning a bit towards the egg shape.

I tried finding a nice Lovat yesterday and the nicest one I found was that Radice you are looking at. One thing you need to be careful of with Lovats is the wall thickness. Many of them are too thin for my tastes and I stay away from pipes weighing less than 40 grams in most cases.
That Bay Denmark pipe at 30 grams is an example of walls being too thin. I believe it will smoke hot if you are not extremely careful. I know when I smoke I hate having to be careful. I smoke at a cadence that is comfortable for me and thin walled pipes just don't fit my smoking style.
I would grab that Radice before someone else does.

Thanks for the advice on wall thickness... As much as I have loved a few pipes I have owned, thin walls can ruin a smoke. The lovat I had in mind was more of a traditional British one... but I have always wanted a Radice... and that one is quite attractive.

So far, this is the frontrunner for my Lovat budget. It's far from a Lovat, but I like it so much better than any Lovat I have seen so far... It's a Kai Nielson rocking poker VVVV

Lasttango, do you know anything about Kai Nielsen? I don't and have never known anyone who has owned one of his pipes. I am not saying they are not great, but with Danes comes shank dimensions all over the place. I would go for a Radice any day as I know how great they smoke.
What is that last picture and how long is too long?

Since you opened the door with that non Lovat take a look at this beauty. It is not a Lovat but I am a Dublin fan over Lovats.
Check the walls on this puppy. I have owned several Winslow in my time and the only reason I ever got rid of them was the acrylic stems. Other wise I would still own them as they were all great smokers. I only owned their hand made from E-B.

I've had a Kai Nielsen before. It was a great pipe and I'm sorry I ever sold it. Great draw, comfortable bit and very carefully made. Definitely would buy another one.

lasttango - my PAD for another lovat has me thinking as well. I'm debating between these two, although I know it's not really a fair comparison since one is twice what the other is. Still, they seem to be about the same dimension, the PS being slightly bigger in the chamber/bowl:
Stanwell

PS
Should I just save the cash and take the Stanwell? I'm using it strictly for VA tobacco, so any thoughts would be appreciated.
