In the sticks in Mississippi
No it's not the name of a stripper, but I suppose it could be. Nor is it anything related to pipe smoking. But I thought it was an interesting mushroom or toadstool or what ever. It is not a flower though. I've never seen one before, but while out walking I noticed a few around underneath a tree. This one was about the size of a quarter which was the average size of most of them. Any ideas of what they are?

piper64: Thanks for sending me on the right track. I would never have thought to call it a fairy umbrella, but that is indeed what it is. I just called it a lacy shroom for lack of a better way to describe it. Boy, there are a lot of varieties of these things!
Oh and thanks Cosmic!

I don't have my reference books on hand but at a glance I would place this in the family Psathyrellaceae. Recently there has been a lot of taxonomic revision of this family so I hesitate to even suggest a genus. These fruiting bodies don't last long. Probably if you go back all you'll find is a bit of black goop.
