Just a cool little story about Keens Steakhouse in NYC. Traditionally steakhouses and cigars always go hand in hand. My sister went to Keens Steakhouse in NYC last night, when she walked into the office this morning she came up to me and told me I had to go I said the steak was that good I guess she said yes absolutely but the ceiling is full of pipes. I said like water pipes she said no you J#$%A$%. The ceiling is full of tobacco pipes and I bought one for you. Thanks to Google I checked the place out. Sure as hell the ceiling in all of the rooms is covered with churchwarden pipes. I thought it was pretty cool, so when bored and tooling around check this place out online. BTW I said how was the bill and it comes in an envelope that says "now the bad news" and left it at that...LOL

In New York? Not a chance...restaurant smoking banned in 2003. The day before the ban went into effect, they gave Bloomberg a pipe which is still hanging in the restaurant unsmoked....

I remember smoking my pipe in my office while working at Pfizer in NYC in the late 1970's and no one thought anything of it. I can't say I miss New York at all.

I was in Keens a couple years ago for the mutton chop (highly recommended)and sure enough there were hundreds of clay pipes displayed on the ceiling. Great steakhouse.

It's a glorious place, steeped not only in New York history, but in American history, with great food and service. The pipes are a tradition; a patron would have his own clay on hand at the restaurant, and staff would bring it to him when he visited. It's my understanding the registry, or much of it, has been lost.

Keen's used to be the unofficial meeting place for those members of the Universal Coterie of Pipe Smokers (Tom Dunn's group) who were in the NYC area. In those days, each of us would buy a pipe, which was then inscribed with our name, and, when we had finished smoking, it would be hung up awaiting our next visit.
Those were the days.........

Sounds like a classy place. So sad that tradition has to go the way side. You can't smoke in a resteraunt in Missouri or a bar that has a certain percentage of sales from food. Smoking patios have become the new thing at least, but it's no fun in the winter.

I've been to Keens several times, and yes, it is a very good restaurant. Not the best steakhouse in NYC, mind you, but very good.
I remember when all of the steak houses allowed cigar/pipe smoking. Seems like a million years ago...

The no smoking ban must be what's best for the people since Bloomberg supports it.
LOL I would love to throw stones at this guy (Bloomberg), but its happening all around the known universe and it just seems pointless to fight anymore.
Ok, maybe not fighting is the wrong attitude.

Peter Lugers' is one of the great steakhouses, without question. My challenge with that place is the attitude.
They are so crowded every day of the week, they just don't need me or my group of business associates.
Give me Mortons where I'm treated with respect and still get an excellent steak. At this time in my life I'd rather be treated well and get an excellent meal than made to feel like I'm a nobody.
My 2 cents
