Zulus and Horns are all I’m buying now, am I an odd duck for limiting my collection? Anybody share my passion for the Zulu?

Yes, I love the look of Zulu's (although I do not own one yet.) I'd love to grab one as my next pipe.
And I love that Rad zulu.

Love that Rad Davis Zulu! The Zulu, Horn or Poker is fast becoming my favorite style too even though I do not have any yet.

I'm intrigued with the Zulu shape. Could someone define it, as distinct from horn and maybe Dublin and other

different but related shapes? Could someone take a look at the Iwan Ries new pipe site, under the Hardcastle

brand and comment on their zulu, relative to other ones. It looks sort of Calabash-like to me. Also, I've

always been interested in the Iwan Ries summary on Hardcastle pipes which comes across to me as sternly

negative. These are not pricey pipes, but they seem to have an old-timer aura, not so bad. But how does

Hardcastle do with the zulu shape? Apparently newer Hardcastle pipes elsewhere online are more

expensive and are not zulus. Incidentally, I don't take any of the pipes that seem associated with Dunhill --

that would be Parker, Hardcastle, and maybe Britannia -- as anything like Dunhill seconds. The shapes

don't match up, and I doubt there is any pass-along between any of those brands. Low and mid-price

pipes are just that, and some of them smoke really well, and some not.

Zulus are great shapes. I love them as well.
And yes you are crazy for limiting yourself. :puffy:

The above gives the classic description of a Zulu / Woodstock. Although, different makers sometimes choose different names for their pipes or blend styles. Either way, it's lovely shape.

I currently have a Zulu being made for me by Rad Davis and it will be my first. I really like the shape and don't know why I don't own any. It is from the same family as my favorite shape the Dublin, so I am really looking forward to receiving my first one.
I like the look on many horns and it is another shape I will be adding to my collection some day. My favorite horns are from Tom Eltang but it will be a while before I can afford one of his. I think no one gets as much birdseye as he does on his horns.

Oh, I love that Pipepedia site. I can see that burning several more hours in this obsession of mine.

Withnail, that's a terrific pipepedia link and pegs the zulu shape perfectly, and also

puts it synonymous with the yacht, which I had wondered about. I printed off the

page for my pipe hardcopy file. Thank you so much. From this info I would say

the Iwan Ries Hardcastle is a fair representation of the zulu shape, and since it is

not pricey, I may invest. (I just don't want my collection to become clutter, and

with the pipe show coming up next month; hard to know when and where to

draw the line. I guess that's where the guys who will only buy expensive pipes

have me.)

For me the zulu is#21 on the Dunhill chart and horn is #35 :) unless of course we're talking about a Dane horn, then I guess it's whatever they want it to be ;)
