I decided to try a different flake from my 1792 and Braken flakes. I have tthis really cool Kaywoodie H6 that has a really small conical bowl that should be perfect.

I like it so much that I just bought another in a smooth finish. Anywhoo, I have a hard time keeping the 1792 and Braken lit - any advice? I plan on trying the fold and stuff method first.

Well that didn't work so well. Did I mention that it has a small bowl?

I'm on my third bowl of OGS. I quite like it. I find it very mild, but with a good, sweet taste of Virginia. I occasionally get a little whiff of the much touted citrus taste. It's a keeper, and an affordable one at that.

20 minutes in and I am really liking the sweet grass and spicy perique. You can work up a full head of steam if you are not carefull!
I may be getting a touch dizzy 8)

Lovely looking pipe that, has flake pipe written all over it! Don't rush it with your flakes, you'll get the perfect result through trial & error.

OGS is lovely stuff. It will teach you to slow down and taste an elegant, milder tobacco with lots of nuance and some complexity. It's a great introduction or re-introduction to Virginias. But you have to relax and let it come to you, like a cat. I'd never noticed that it is particularly nicotine strong, but now and then, that's good too. I do appreciate flake. It gives a longer smoke and often seems to impart a richer flavor. Take your time. If it's not an immediate hit, jar it and try it in a few months. Virginias gain the most of any leaf from some age.

It took right at an hour to finish the bowl. Then I dumped it the cut off pieces and got another 15 or 20 minutes more. Very satisfying smoke!
I think it will try cubing the cut-offs next time.

I have had 2 tins of OGS in my life. My first was about the time I took up the pipe and found it pleasant. The second was a year or so ago and all I could smell and taste was bergamot and it was utterly nauseating. I really hated it. I like bergamot in Earl Grey but have found it foul in my pipe.
People seem to say that the topping is subtle and perhaps my second tin had more of that flavouring than was intended but it was such a puke inducing experience it is unlikely I will ever revisit it. It was as subtle as a London bus in a swimming pool and made the taste of tobacco unreachable to me.
Nice looking pipe though.

 -That picture cracked me up, randelli.
I'm glad you like the Golden Slices. One of my favorites! So help me, I think you informed a very important decision ...

I will have to think about the bergamot. Are you saying they top this with bergamot, or, that you sense bergamot when you smoke it? I haven't tasted it so far - at least not at the Earl Grey level. I will try and sip it slower and search for the subtleties mso mentioned above.
Oh, I mispoke about the incoming sister H6 pipe, it is actually a cousin H9 Kaywoodie. I think this would be a thorn?

Orlik Golden Sliced is my go to blend, I smoked it many different ways (all in a briar pipe mind you 8) ) . My favorite was cubed, but who wants to take all that time to prep tobacco, am I right? I usually just rip it out of the tin and smash it into my pipe! Hope you enjoy it as much as I do! :puffpipe:

Jefff- here is one more of the guitar. It is part of a pair I put together for the kids a few Christmases ago.

I just tried OGS for the first time myself a couple weeks ago. I don't dislike it but I'm not sure it rocks my boat either. A little more time and a few more bowls will be needed to decide where I stand on this one. :puffy:

It took me some time to realize I like my Bright Virginias stewed, stoved, pressed or otherwise denatured from some of the sweetness.
I am willing to bet that this is why so many are aging their OGS for enjoyment in 2023...

I rubbed out the OGS last night and it took on a different flavor. I had to rewrite that sentance three times 8) I think I liked the fold and stuff better; but it did burn nicely into the mythical white ash - mostly.
Tonight I cubed it up and liked it better. It also burned very evenly and was quite full with flavor. Hey, here is a lessoned learned, thought I would pass it along. When walking down stairs with a forward canted bowl full of cube cut OGS... don't look down.
That half bowl was pretty tasty though :)

Well heck! The H9 is one I missed out on. I did have an H6 smooth waiting for me when I got home tonight. Hooray for me, right??
Wrong. Somebody reamed the fork out of this bowl! It is maybe 1/4" wider with straight sides until it meets the old conical bottom. I can only get the first section of my pinkie in the pipe you see above - I can bury my whole index finger in the new one until it bottoms out. I am NOT happy!
It certainly won't smoke like the pipe above. I wonder if it is even smokable at all. I sent a message to the ebay seller (can we name names?) And got an "out of office" response in return. He was available last weekend when we made the deal.
Sorry for the rant. Wife isn't so sympathetic about those stinky pipes. What should I do?

Thanks tonsel, I needed the comic relief. I guess I should play a guitar to take my mind off of this. I am pretty worked up about it :)
