I was thinking three or four days. But then, if I'm cogitating some big project

or question, or have hit the big bowls in my rotation, maybe two. Sometimes

I'll hit a streak where I'm just not getting to my pipes, but this assumes I am.

It's hard to tell because I have so many tobaccos going at any one time.

I had wondered this myself, so I stayed with one blend, Peterson

UF, having about twenty flakes in the tin; two bowls per day

with a full flake....10-days ;-)

Considering the number of blends I have in rotation, a long time.
Now, if I count all blends, I smoke an ounce in about 3 days, if you figure 3 grams to a bowl.

I keep 4-5 blends in the rotation and am lucky to get in two pipes a day. Add to that the fact that I usually smoke half- to three-quarters of a bowl, and I get pretty good mileage out of an ounce.

No idea. I purchased several different 2 oz. samples right off the bat when I started, and I rotate through them as the mood strikes me. So far, I've only finished off one, and that was due largely to a conscious effort on my part to smoke it more often so that I could re-use the jar. There's another one that's close, but as I'm not smoking as much now that I'm employed, it will be a while before I feel the TAD urge.

In an earlier post someone said that 1 oz yields about 9 average sized bowls. Using that formula, I probably go through 2 ounces a week.

Let's take a Dunhill GROUP 4 size pipe (14 of my random pipes are within +- 10% of that size so either my collection is biased or many pipes are about a Group 4).
A group 4 measures (inside dimensions)

- Diameter = 20mm, thus radius=10mm

- Height = 37mm
We can use these dimensions to calculate the volume of the tobacco chamber V1= pi * radius * radius * height = pi * 10 * 10 * 37 = 11,623 cubic mm
I usually pack the tobacco about as tight as I find it in a Dunhill Nightcap tin.
That tin measures:

- Diameter: 100mm, thus radius = 50mm

- Height: 27mm
and holds 50g of tobacco, thus those 50g of tobacco are kept inside a volume of V2 = pi * 104 * 104 * 27 = 917,445 cubic mm
So we know that at the packing grade of about Dunhill Nightcap we have a weight of 0.000235 grams of pipe tobacco per cubic mm (divide 50g by V2).
In return, we now know that a group 4 bowl at that packing density would use up V1 * 0.000235 = 2.74g grams of our tobacco.
There are 28.34 grams in 1 oz, therefore 1 oz will fill 10 full group 4 bowls, and one group 2 bowl.

28.35 grams to an ounce means if I smoke a pipe that holds 4 grams, and I smoke 4 bowls a day, that gives me almost 2 days of smoking. If I smoke a smaller pipe and use only 3 grams that will give me over 2 days of smoking bliss. I probably average 3.5 grams per bowl and about 9.5-10 pounds a year. Pipe tobacco is without a doubt the cheapest way to enjoy tobacco. Even figuring smoking only expensive tins which works out to about 80.00 a pound, that is only 800 per year. A pack a day cigarette habit is 2200.00 a year here in Florida which has fairly cheap prices. Since I quit the cigarettes, I am saving 1400 a year times 20 years that is a savings of 28,000.00 The price of my cellar cost me nothing when you figure it all out. 200 pounds at 80 a pound is 16,000.00 I still saved 12 grand and now I have a loaded cellar. See how easy it is to justify buying pipe tobacco? lol
