Shel Silverstein was their cartoonist. Hefner, I have heard, was not really a pipesmoker. He pretended for TV. Pipes were very cool back in the 1950s. The Playboy photographers put a pipe in the corner of many of the early centerfolds, like a company signature.
I can see why Heff got along with Shel Silverstein. Sure, we've all seen "Where the sidewalk ends" and "The Giving Tree"... but few people have read his *other* stuff. For example, an ABC book that should never be given to children:
