Sorry for being ignorant but is there a functioning point for having a "smoking coat" or us it a style thing? I have a shirt that does not absorb the sell of the smoke. Is this similar?

@easterntraveler, smoking jackets were popular from the late 19th century until abouot the 1930's. When a "gentleman" got home for the day he would exchange his suit jacket for the smoking jacket for the evening. Very formal by today's standards but I have to admit that they do lend a certain panache to the hobbyist.

Obviously it is B. He totally has pipe envy and knows he is outclassed.
Those are some nice jackets, but I think I'll stick to my flannel shirt. I find the breast pocket is the perfect place to keep my matches and tamper at the ready.

I for one have a much, much cheaper smoking jacket that I received last Christmas and love it. It's great in the winter months, both for smoking and in place of a bathrobe (it's shorter and doesn't get in my way, but is still very warm). It's also got easily accessible pockets. Add a full pipe, a fireplace and a good book and that's my ideal winter evening!
