I know there are threads on this but haven't yet seen an answer. I just got an older gourd estate calabash and was wondering what if anything is used on the inside to maintain it? Does anybody wipe the inside with anything, inside of the gourd I mean. Olive oil? It seems like the gourd would get dried out otherwise and have the potential for cracking.

That is a question that comes up from time to time.

I agree that there really hasn't been an adequate answer.

All I can do is convey the following:

I have had my Gourd Calabashes for more than 30 years.

I don't smoke them much because the bowls are so large.

But, I haven't done anything save "tap" out any ash that managed to drop into the gourd.

Neither of mine show any change in those 30 years.

I believe the gourd is thoroughly dried during its preparation prior to assembly and shouldn't need any oils, cleaners or the like.

I know that is only anecdotal but that's my experience.

You don't have to do anything to the gourd. Mine are also 30+ years old and I've done anything more than dump the ash. Once or twice over the years I've gently run a bristle brush to knock some more ash off, but not on a regular basis.
I have found gourds to be the easiest pipes to care for that I've ever owned.
