I recently took part in my first Pipe smoking contest. I didn't finish last but would like to improve my time. While looking a different pipe smoking sites I came across the a technique called "ember chasing" bit with no details. Has anyone heard of this and if so where and what information can be found.

I'm not really sure, but it seems to imply to smoke slowly enough that the pipe almost goes out and then when it's near it's last bit of being alight, you bring it back to life with a few puffs.
That would be my take on it without finding any descriptions of the meaning either.
How did you do in the contest? Where was it? How many people? Who won?

The contest was in Shepherd ,MI The top time was 1hr 20min 44 sec and I finished in the top 30 out of 50.
According to a site in the UK ember chasing is a European technique.

I read a blog on this website that was entitled Amber chasing! The person who wrote this blog participated in a slow smoke competition and finish roughly around 45 minutes with the winner at one hour and 22 minutes. They wrote the blog about how they made mistakes when the weather changed various aspects of their training, but for the life of me I can't remember who it was who wrote the blog

On an absurd note, I thought the title of the post implied an activity that occurs when the wind blows into your bowl and you have the rapidly pat down your shirt and pants.

Kyletheaviator, That would be Ember Chasing.

You probably read my blog posts from a couple of years ago.

To me Ember Chasing is a tamping and puffing technique where one restricts the air flow in the bowl with nearly continuous use of a tamper. Used to feed a very small ember and to control temperature and air flow.

Here's the link to the first... These are just my observations when trying to learn some slow smoke technique...

After all I was up against that year's National Champ. :D

My pipe club holds smoking contests about once a month. Our president is Mike Doc Garr, he has been the North American pipe smoking champion several times. Hopefully once again this year, the contest is in a couple days.
We talk about chasing embers more as an observation than a technique. If you go to a big contest youll see alot of people cupping their hands around the bowl to try and see the ember. You want a tiny ember on the top of the bowl, it usually goes down and comes up, but you want to keep it on top, and it goes around the bowl in a circle if you do it right. so you are chasing the ember, it is mostly luck on how it works, but if there is any one thing that helps the most its the packing method. If you get that wrong you lose.
Thats about all I can give you at the moment, you can pm me if you have any questions and anything I cant answer myself Ill ask Doc and he'll give you an answer, I see him on thursday

I do believe you hit it square on the head Lawrence! All I can say is Siri (for us iPhone users) and alcohol don't always give you the results you're looking for!

But yes, that was the blog I read! Very well written if I do say so myself. :)
