Does anyone know of any pipe makers in Holland? Would like to get my hands on a Dutch made pipe.
Thanks

I do have an Amphora billiard, a Big Ben chimney with long stem and a Hilson Fantasia.

They are all good smokers.

Hello!

I get confused when it comes to what some people consider Holland and the rest of the Netherlands, but you might want to check out http://pipedia.org/wiki/Category:Netherlands
I've got a few older Hilson's that I love. They are on sale at Pipes and Cigars too.
As far as the Big Bens, they are starting to put out some nice looking pipes IMO.

The Dutch tend to be quite sardonic about the Belgiums, but I don't ask too many questions. The Dutch

I know have a great love of precision and design, so I would expect Big Ben pipes to be well engineered

and handsome. I've had my eyes on both Big Bens and Hilsons, but I've never found quite the right pipe

at the right price. One great thing about Amsterdam and (I hear) Rotterdam is that the people are so

incredibly multi-lingual. It's not unusual for them to have general conversational skills in multiple

European languages and maybe one or two others. They start early and have access to so many languages

in person, to use. It is awe inspiring.

I think the Netherlands and Belgium were originally part of the same territory. I just picked up a Big Ben, pictures to come...

The two terms are often used as one. But in fact The Netherlands is the whole country, Holland is a province. Well, two provinces: Noord en Zuid Holland (North and South Holland).
The Dutch tend to be quite sardonic about the Belgiums, but I don't ask too many questions.
And the Belgian folks are quite sardonic towards us. The stereotype is that Belgian folks are dumb (Why does a Belgian man takes a knife with him during driving? Because he then can take a short-cut). And the stereotype for the Dutch is that we are cheap and arrogant.
And yes, Belgium and the Netherlands were one once. But in 1830 Belgium declared independence: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belgian_Revolution

Thanks Arno. I enjoy your blog by the way.
Carcosa that looks great. Please let me know how it smokes. They've got some really nice shapes. Al Pascia has some very nice ones. http://www.alpascia.com/pipes/d/Big-Ben-028-i25814.html
Back to Hilson. I do have one newer one (stamped made in Holland) and it smokes just as good as my older Made in Belgium ones. I don't collect certain brands (my collection is all over the place) but I do always keep on the look out for Hilson's. They just feel like a solid, well put together pipe, and they smoke really effortlessly without needing to fiddle with tempo or tending to the tobacco much.

And thank you for reading! Hilson pipes are very solid indeed, just like Big Ben. In fact, my first pipe was a Hilson (don't have it anymore..). See the picture below.
By the way, at the end of 2011 a group of members of the Dutch pipe smokers forum (including myself) visited the Gubbels factory. This links to the site of stonecutter Martin Romijn, al lot of pictures: http://members.chello.nl/m.romijn4/otherstuff/MeetingGubbels.html

Just got my pipe today, it is a lot smaller than I was hoping for, but I guess that is why they call it a "Charme"

Well I broke it in a bit today, it's a nice little smoker, although it lasts for no longer than half an hour at most. Smoked some Dunhill Elizabethan followed by some 3 Oaks Syrian followed by some St. James Flake. Made me decide to put another small pipe back in my rotation.
The grain is really beautiful.
