I don't often get tempted by a Dunhill, but this one had me looking several times, but the price is too steep fro my pocket book. I have not yet seen a Shape 29, it is a beauty. Smoking Pipes has it at shape 129 but the one is for the tapered stem. It is not listed on any shape number I've seen, but there is a gap. Too bad, the Group 4 and weight is perfect for my tastes...

Authors will catch your eye. One of my favorite shapes. Great looking pipe but I can't bring myself to fork out the big bucks just for the name stamped on the pipe.

Well, turns out that one is a real bargain. This unsmoked 1979 Root Briar is a little more dear....

But, it too is gorgeous.

Dunhill does a beautiful pipe, and the prices keep them behind glass and out of reach, which makes them

unattainably delicious. That author is a sweet one. I guess I'll have to smoke my Luciano and Peterson

authors instead.

Mike, so it looks like the CK became the 29, or maybe the better way to say it is Dunhill's current author shape is the 29.
But Al, the pipe is on sale!!! I would agree with Mike, keep a lookout for a nice estate CK. Which do you prefer, smooth or shell?

Thanks Mike & Dave. The CK is the lone Dunhill shape on my Holy Grail list (1961 CK, Shell or Bruyere). Btw, Mikes focus on collecting initiated that list! I wonder if the CK did become the 29, they sure are similar.
The only problem is CK's are pretty rare and dear, but patience has paid off so far, so I wait and watch.

I love the shape. That might be a Dunhill worth owning. Not crazy about the black marks on the second one though,

Here's why a CK will be quite elusive....a 74 that needs some work.

Well, price not withstanding, it appears that someone snagged it. Al--did you, in a moment of weakness, ...? We understand, and you just don't want to admit it. :)

Hey guys- New to this site but not to pipes. I thought I would post a pic of my 29 if you're interested. Smokingpipes got one in today and most likely referenced this thread in their write-up (how I found this) while talking about how rare they are. On the smaller size at only 5 inches (4129.) The last pic compares it to an Ashford and gr 3 bull 08.

That is a great first post Buckaroo! I briefly glanced at the SP's update yesterday and missed the newly listed Shape 29. As they said, "the shape that doesn't exist".

Your picture only whets my appetite for this shape! It's interesting to see the size comparison. I also have an Ashford, from the Family era. At the Philly club last week, I was able to compare it to a Patent era Ashford. My Ashford is slightly smaller with a different bowl shape and stem bend. I guess that is why we collect them!

I just saw your Ashford post and I'm a bit jealous as I think the tapered stem gives them more character.
I avoided Dunhill's for a long time because I assumed they were over-priced, showy, name driven only briars, but I get great flavors out of them and they are not even from the golden era (pre-'67.) I have a new uniquely shaped root coming tomorrow and I hope it will be the same.
