Offered as an option upon custom order, the sterling silver bit is said to protect from bite-marks, be hygienic and act as a counterweight for better balance.
It's rarely seen and very expensive I'd reckon.
Another one of those pipe trivia tidbits, if I had ever come across one before I knew this, I woulda thought it was an aftermarket add-on, or that somebody had messed it up with silver paint or somethin'...
