Do different pipe shapes render tobacco flavor differently? About half of my collection are churchwardens (it's the Sherlock Holmes obsession; Holmes smoked churchwardens). Another half consist of various shapes. And I have noticed that I can taste the flavor more fully and easily with non-churchwardens. The churchwardens never bite, renders very cool smoke, but less vivid flavor. Just want to check with those more experienced if I'm right about this. And also, to ask if, among the non-churchwardens, different shapes render flavor differently still. What's your experience?

Yes they do have an effect on the flavors. I think this article will give you a good idea of how.

These articles have been posted in other threads, yet are worth repeating ad infinitum and are great reading--down to the very last comment!

The science geek in me loves to explore the mechanics behind what happens, and this was a really enlightening look that is already changing the way I smoke--and improving the results, especially on thermodynamics. I've gone from a 20-matches per bowl smoker (I can hear the laughs, let it out ) to about 5 matches, with vastly improved flavour and enjoyment.

You can equate pipes and tobacco similarly to wine/spirits and glasses. Wine and spirits will taste differently in different glasses.
here is another good read about it written in the blog of one of our members:

Great articles Richard. Thanks.

Some of his comments confirmed some of my anecdotal observations about the slow smoke.

He has given me some "food for thought".
Thanks again.
